STATISTICAL SURVEYS AND QUALITY OF ECONOMIC DATA
The course aims at developing expertise to:
- Be able to manage analytic tools for planning each step of a statistical survey
- Know how to use the methodology and analytic instruments that statistics provides to data treatment (mainly, business and economic data) and data quality
- Be able to manage the complexity of the several steps of a statistical survey from an operational point of view.
Expected learning outcomes: Knowledge and understanding:
The student should be able to know the main theories and techniques for planning in each step a statistical survey to collect economic data.
Applying knowledge and understanding:
The student should be able to use the acquired knowledge in practical circumstances, applying the main statistical tools for data collection and for analysing business and economic dynamics.
The student should have the maturity and the ability to choose autonomously the more suited instrument to solve a specific problem.
The student should be able to communicate clearly and with an adequate technical language the contents of the Course and to apply them in business and economic contexts.
Lifelong learning skills:
The student should be able to show a good learning ability and autonomy in investigating in-depth the matters of the Course using the references provided by the teacher. The student should be able to implement the more suited methodologies in the specific circumstances.
Basic tools of general mathematics, statistics (descriptive and inference)
Official statistics: national statistical system; international statistical system; European and central bank system; quality dimensions; structural statistics and conjunctures. Statistical surveys: typologies; sample methods; survey design and objectives; questionnaire; sampling and non -sampling errors; missing data; control and correction procedures. Official statistical surveys: Survey on Household Income and Wealth (SHIW); Labour Force Survey; Household Budget Survey; business surveys.
The contents of the course can be divided into three main topics:
1) Official statistics: national statistical system; international statistical system; European and central bank system; quality dimensions; structural statistics and conjunctures (12 hours).
2) Statistical surveys: typologies; sample methods; survey design and objectives; questionnaire; sampling and non -sampling errors; missing data; control and correction procedures (18 hours).
3) Official statistical surveys: Survey on Household Income and Wealth (SHIW); Labour Force Survey; Household Budget Survey; business surveys (18 hours).
Traditional lectures. Case-studies discussion. Group work projects (optional).

The learning assessment is on an ongoing basis during the Course. Students are continuously expected to take part into work projects. The discussion of the materials produced and the presentation of their results are planned at the end of the Course using slides. A final oral assessment is planned at the end of the Course with the possible presentation of the project.
