PREVENTIVE AND SOCIAL PEDIATRICS
Knowledge and understanding The student should demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the issues related to the practice of motor and sport activities in relation to the different phases of growth, psychomotor and pubertal development as well as the principles of pediatric nutrition and healthy behaviors for the prevention of major chronic diseases.
Ability to apply knowledge and understanding The student should be able to apply pediatric knowledge in sports and school contexts, to recognize the signs of a harmonious growth and development process, and to identify signs of discomfort linked to body image disorders or forms of maltreatment, abuse or victimization, in a family, sports or school environment. It must be able to draw interdisciplinary projects aimed at promoting physical activity and sports in pediatric age.
Autonomy of judgment The student should be able to deepen his/her own knowledge of himself/herself, in a critical manner and by integrating knowledge from other disciplines, in order to reach an ever-wider autonomy of judgment.
Communicative Skills The student should acquire the ability to explain in a simple way, but with a correct scientific language, the knowledge learned, with particular regard to the promotion of proper nutrition and healthy lifestyles for children, teenagers and parents.
Learning Ability: Students should be able to update themselves on a continuous and autonomous basis through consultation of scientific texts and online libraries. The student will be stimulated to discuss in the classroom scientific articles from the international literature.
Basic knowledge of Anatomy, Biology, Physiology, Hygiene, Statistics.
Growth, maturation and development
Statistical growth: hereditary and environmental factors. Hormones and their function on statural growth. Stature and body proportions: methods of measurement and evaluation. Percentiles tables. The child with statural problems: medical, motor and psychosocial implications.
Pubertal development: hereditary and environmental factors. Hormones and their function on pubertal development. The child with puberty problems: medical, motor and psychosocial implications. Common adolescent endocrine problems: amenorrhea, gynecomastia, acne. Contraception in adolescents. Prevention of sexually transmitted diseases.
Growth and maturation of the nervous system: stages of psychomotor development. The language. Prenatal and perinatal prevention of mental retardation: genetic counseling, neonatal screening.
Feeding in the infant, in the child and in the adolescent. The main nutritional disorders and their prevention (hypercholesterolemia, hypertriglyceridemia, excess or deficiencies of specific micronutrients (sodium, iron, calcium, iodine, fluorine, vitamin D, folic acid).
Food and school meals: "special" diets; food allergy.
Lifestyles of adolescents and risky behavior.
Prevention strategies and treatment of obesity. Disorders of eating behavior and body image.
Maltreatment and abuse
Definition, types of maltreatment (physical, psychological, sexual abuse, neglect). Triggering factors, signs of suspicion, prevention, treatment. The phenomenon in the world of sport.

Nutrition Block 2 15 hrs
Topic 1 Diet in infants, children and adolescents.
Topic 2 Nutritional deficiencies and prevention.
Topic 3 Diet at school: special diets; food allergies.
Lifestyle in adolescents and risk taking behaviours. Block 3 6 hrs
Topic 1 Prevention and treatment of obesity.
Topic 2 Eating and body image disorders.
Maltreatment and abuse Block 4 3 hrs

Oral testing to ensure the acquisition of the knowledge and skills covered by the study, 2) ability to re-elaborate them, with interdisciplinary links, 3) ability to apply them in sports and school contexts, 4)
ability to design interdisciplinary projects to promote physical activity.
In particular, the first part will focus on isues related to normal or pathological physical growth, the second part to psychomotor development also in relation to sports participation, the third part to the principles of nutrition, the fourth to healthy lifestyles and prevention strategies ..
The evaluation of the tests takes into account the completeness and accuracy of the answers, as well as the clarity in the presentation.
To pass the test, you need acquire at least a score of 18 out of 30.
