Course description

The object of the course is the study of the living systems at a molecular level: the structure of the components that make up cells, how they are formed, the relation between their structure and their function, and their involvement in the cell primary metabolism will be studied in detail.

Prerequisites

It is mandatory to possess the basic knowledge in Inorganic and Organic Chemistry

Syllabus

Structure and properties of aminoacids and proteins. Enzymes: kinetics and activity's regulation. Methods fo purification and characterization of proteins and enzymes. Structure and properties of carbohydrates and lipis. Biological membranes and mechanisms of cross-membrane transport. Nucleic acids. Glycolysis. Krebs's cycle. Lipid's beta-oxidation. Oxidation of aminoacids. The oxidative phosphorylation. The biosynthesis of carbohydrates, of lipids and aminoacids. The protein synthesis.

Teaching Methods

Textbooks

Main text: DAVID L. NELSON, MICHAEL M. COX: “Introduzione alla Biochimica di Lehninger”, Ed.
Zanichelli.

The course's slides are available at the following link: http://e-scienzeetecnologie.uniparthenope.it/moodle/

Learning assessment

The exam id divided in two parts:

1) a written test to verify the knowledge of the chemical reactions of the primary metabolism pattern

2) an oral exam to verify the knowledge of the connections between the structure of the biomolecules and their involvemnt in the primary metabolism
