GEODESY AND NAVIGATION
Lectures in Italian
The course aims to provide the student with the theoretical and practical basis of Geodesy and Navigation.
Knowledge and understanding: The student must demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the problems related to the determination of the earth’s shape, its gravitational field, its cartographic representation. The main aim is the planning and control of trajectories .
Ability to Apply Knowledge and Understanding: The student must demonstrate how to use the acquired concepts and tools needed to plan trajectories and mapping them.
Judgment autonomy: Students must be able to independently evaluate situations different from those presented by the teacher during the course and to adopt the best methodologies for solving them.
Communicative Skills: The student should have the ability to present an elaborate about Geodesy and Navigation topics using the correct scientific language.
Learning Skills: The student must be able to update continuously through consultation of texts and publications (also in English) in order to acquire the ability to deepen the topics of Geodesy and Navigation.
Knowledge of the topics of Mathematics I and Physics I.
Earth's shape: geoid, spherical and ellipsoidal models; Gauss sphere, Foundations of Operating Geodesy. Geodetic triangles. Problems on transformation of Coordinates. Geodetic networks. Determination of gravity.
The mapping problem: the representation of the Earth's surface on the plane, linear, angular and superficial deformation. Analytical study of maps. Classification of maps according to scale, goals and deformations. Perspective and development projections; gnomonic, stereographic, scenographic, orthographic maps; polar, meridian and azimuthal projections; cylindrical and conical maps; analytical maps.
Nautical cartography: Mercator projection, nautical charts; the use of Mercator and Gnomonic projections.
Orientation and Navigation: orientation; magnetic compass; routing; corrections and conversion of the heading; bearings; use of bearings in navigation. Estimated navigation and its errors. leeway and drift; current problems. Rhumb line and its properties.
Rhumb line navigation and resolution of the first and second problems on spherical and ellipsoidal earth. Observed navigation principles. Orientation. Geometric Horizon, Geodetic Refraction, Marine Horizon and Radar Horizon. Estimated navigation.

The objective of the exam is to check the level of achievement of the training goals previously indicated.
The examination is oral, with an initial threshold question that enables the continuation of the examination, centered on solving a simple orientation problem.
