FUNDAMENTALS OF MECHANICS
The course is intended to introduce students to basic knowledge of Continuum Mechanics and particularly of Solid Mechanics, starting from the basic knowledge of physics up to the definition of stresses and strains in a continuous body, more usual constitutive laws, with particular reference to linear elastic and isotropic behaviour, to the presentation of the strength criteria. The course also introduces the basic elements of the geometry of masses. The course is preparatory to Scienza delle Costruzioni, Idraulica, Meccanica delle Terre

Basic concepts of Physics : Vectors and their properties; Tensors and their properties; Equations of Dynamics; Equations of Statics.
Stresses: stresses in a continuous body; Cauchy tetrahedron; indefinite equilibrium equations; main stresses and main directions; Stresses invariants ; Mohr circles .
Strains: definition of the strain tensor ; invariants of strains; congruence equations ; Mohr circles of deformations .
Constitutive laws : definition of constitutive law ; simplification in isothermal conditions and for non- viscous media ; linear elasticity, linear and isotropic elasticity; Navier formulas; Elastic parameters.
Strength criteria : Hencky - Von Mises ; Tresca ; Mohr - Coulomb .
