Course description

The course is aimed to provide the theoretical and practical foundamentals of the classical and advanced methodologies of topographic and hydrographic surveys in relation to the phases of acquisition, elaboration and representation of data relating to the configuration of the land and the seabed.
Knowledge and understanding: The student must demonstrate knowing and understanding the principles, methods and tools of Topography and Hydrography needed to solve theoretical and practical problems in the field of survey and representation.
Ability to apply knowledge and understanding: The student must demonstrate to correctly use the theoretical and practical concepts acquired during the course for acquisition and representation of datat concerning land and seabed.
Judging autonomy: Students must be able to independently evaluate situations that are different from the standard ones presented by the teacher during the course and to adopt the best methodologies.
Communicative Skills: The student must have the ability to develop and present topics related to Topography and Hydrography using correctly the technical-scientific language.
Learning Skills: The student must be able to update continuously his knowledge through the consultation of texts and publications in order to acquire the ability to deepen the topics of Topography and Hydrography.


Basic knowledge of Physics and Mathematics is required.


Reference systems and surfaces: Cartesian reference systems in the plane and space; rectangular and polar coordinates; Earth gravity field; geoids, spheroids and ellipsoids; orthometric and ellipsoidal heights; geodetic field and topographic field; transformation between reference systems; geodetic reference frames.
Reliability and errors attended in the measurements: Random variables; probability distributions; precision and accuracy; variance, covariance and correlation; propagation of covariance; confidence intervals and error ellipse; compensation measures; estimates of media and variance; minimum squares criterion.
Topographic instruments and methods: Measurement of azimuth and zenith angles: theodolite; distance measurement: electronic distance measuring instruments; altitude measurement: level; intersections, triangulation, trilateration, polygons; trigonometric and geometric leveling; compensation of a network; positioning and navigation through satellite systems; GNSS; WGS84; DGPS; permanent GPS networks and stations; total stations and integrated stations for survey; rapid survey.
Hydrography: Depth measurements; reference systems; echo sounder; sonar; multibeam; bathymetric models: geostatistic methods for interpolation of depth data and 3d representation of sea bottom.
Applications and exercises concerning instruments and methods to acquire and process topographic and hydrographic data.

The course includes the following topics.

Hydrographic instruments and methods.
Applications and exercises concerning instruments and methods to acquire and process topographic and hydrographic data.

Teaching Methods

The Course includes lectures as well as exercises based on the use of survey instruments and software to process topographic and hydrographic data.

Learning assessment

The objective of the exam is to check the level of achievement of the training goals previously indicated.
The exam is just oral and includes discussions of the exercises carried out during the course and concerning the applications of the methods for acquiring and processing topographic and hydrographic data.
