Course description

The course aims to analyze and rebuild the main developments, as well as the fundamental findings which have punctuated history of public administrations in Italy and Europe, with a particular focus on aspects concerning organizational culture.



The course backtraces the studies on historic-institutional processes which have led to modern states’ appearance and to its apparates’ development, with their distinctive features of stability, specialization and focus on public functionality, moving from the analysis of the transformations that happened during the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Age. The main objective is to create a line of thought about public institutions though the use of different investigation perspectives, preferring an approach aimed to underline the incidence of cultural factors on socio-institutional development.

Teaching Methods

The course is structured into frontal lectures, where the students are continuously stimulated to elaborate original contributes through the suggestion of reading materials on the subjects under analysis. Those reading materials may become functional to the writing process of a final paper.
