Course description

The course aims to provide the basic knowledge of diagnostic methods and their applications in motor activity and sports fields.
The main traumatic injuries to which subjects performing motor activities will be evaluated, defining the mechanisms that induces the injury. The role of diagnostic methods will be considered not only for the determination of the pathology but also to define the prognosis and its evolution. The training objective is to allow the Motor Sciences Graduate to acquire information that can be useful for the prevention of accidents, to understand their severity, to evaluate the recovery time necessary for the resolution of the injury and any damage that may compromise the resumption of activity.

Prerequisites

Being a basic teaching, special prerequisites are not necessary if not the knowledge of the subjects of the first two years of the biomedical field (anatomy, biology, biochemistry, physiology, etc.).

Syllabus

PART 1. TECHNICAL PRINCIPLES OF DIAGNOSTIC METHODOLOGIES

• Introduction, with basic concepts on the physical principles on which the diagnostic methods are based and their possible applications also in the therapeutic field, limited to the motor and sports field
• General principles of Radiology
• General principles of ultrasound
• General principles of Computerized Tomography
• General principles of Nuclear Medicine
• General principles of magnetic resonance
• General principles of bone densitometry (osteopenia, osteoporosis, motor activity)

PART 2 DIAGNOSTICS FOR IMAGES IN SPORTS TRAUMATOLOGY:

• soft tissue (muscles, tendons, ligaments);
• the skeleton (fractures, stress fractures, etc.);
• of the joints;
• of the upper limb, with particular attention to the shoulder and elbow;
• of the lower limb, with particular attention to the knee and ankle;
• rectal-adductory syndrome;
• of the skull and vertebral column;
• of the thorax and abdomen.

Knowledge and understanding: The student must demonstrate knowledge of anatomy, radiography, physiology and the main diagnostic methodologies.

Ability to apply knowledge and understanding: The student must demonstrate to be able to use the concepts acquired. The student must be able to face the work both independently and within a multidisciplinary team.

Judgment ability: Students must be able to deepen what they have learned and to integrate the acquired knowledge in other subjects of the course.

Communication skills: The student must have the ability to express themselves on the topics using proper and scientific language.

Learning skills: The student must demonstrate that he has understood the objectives of the course through the discussion in the classroom of the topics of the program

Teaching Methods

Frontal lessons.
Seminars and in-depth meetings related to sports traumatology and functional recovery after injury, with the aid of diagnostic methods.

Learning assessment

The assessment of learning is based on evaluation procedures carried out in the form of direct comparison and presentation of clinical cases with group discussion, coordinated by the teacher in order to review and summarize the main points.
At the end of the course a test will be proposed to determine the degree of learning, in the form of multiple choice quizzes and open-ended questions.
The final exam, carried out in an oral way, will be conducted with questions related to the knowledge of diagnostic technologies and questions on traumatic injuries in sports, with reference to radiographic anatomy and biomechanics to verufy the achivements of the training objectives.
