Excavations and Land Constructions
The objective of the course is to give to the students a basic knowledge in designing Artificial slopes and Embankments.
Recall of Soil Mechanics (1 hour of lessons). Limit Analysis Theorems and applications; Infinite slope; Critical excavation height (3 hours of lessons + 2 of exercise). Limit equilibrium methods: infinite slope; methods of Fellenius, Bishop, Morgenstern & Price; Janbu; Sarma (6 hours of lessons + 6 of exercises). Settlement calculation: oedometric method and Skempton & Bjerrum method; immediate, consolidation and secondary settlement (6 hours of lessons and 6 hours of exercises). Consolidation: techniques to accelerate consolidation (6 hours of lessons and 4 hours of exercises) Construction techniques for embankments (4 hours of lessons). Reinforced earth (2 hours of lessons + 2 of exercise).
