Course description

The course is intended to provide the students with the basic notions they need to recognize language and contents of the socio-cultural topics that will be dealt with. Students will be introduced to several tools whereby to analyse specialist texts of various kinds dealing with a variety of topics. Reading material and text analysis tools will be applied to listening and viewing exercises where such material as documentaries, movies, news reports and adverstisements will be used. Course will strengthen the students’ speaking and writing skills in order for them to attain a solid knwodlege of specific language and cultural traits of the Spanish language.

Prerequisites

Students are required to have reached an intermediate level of proficiency (level B2 of the Eauropean Common Framework fo Reference – ECFR)

Syllabus

Learning objectives:
The course is intended to provide the students with the basic notions they need to recognize language and contents of the socio-cultural topics that will be dealt with. Students will be introduced to several tools whereby to analyse specialist texts of various kinds dealing with a variety of topics. Reading material and text analysis tools will be applied to listening and viewing exercises where such material as documentaries, movies, news reports and adverstisements will be used. Course will strengthen the students’ speaking and writing skills in order for them to attain a solid knwodlege of specific language and cultural traits of the Spanish language.

Syllabus
The course will focus, primarily, on analysing in depth the basic morphosyntactic and morphological traits of the Spanish language. In particular, the characterizing features of Spanish contemporary language and culture will be dealt with and insights provided in specialist languages used, for example, in journalism and politics. Metalinguistic reflection will be encouraged and the students will be asked to enhance their own basic language skills in order to use the Spanish languge in full awareness and autonomy. During the course, a great importance will be given to keeping up to date on current affairs having both a political and cultural connotation. For this reason, such digital tools as online newspapers, documentaries etc are considered an integral part of the learning material available to students in addition to the text books listed below.
Lectures will focus on checking the main grammar rules. To this end, tests will be administered throughout the course.

Course organization:
The course includes direct tuition and hands-on exercises, both individual and in groups.
Students will be given the opportunity to attend conference and seminars held by visiting Spanish scholars of world renown.

Learning assessment
The test includes a written exam and an interview. If they pass the written test with a minimum 18 points out of 30, students will be invited to sit in the interview. During the test, the students’ grammar and communication skills will be assessed as follows: the test includes two parts: the first part in a written text comprehension exercise, with short answers. The second part is a short translation from Spansh into Italian.
Vocabularies and dictionaries will be allowed during the written test.
The interview will be a conversation in Spanish on the topics dealt with during the course or studied on the textbook , El mundo en español. Lectura de cultura y civilización .

Students who attend the course may work in groups of 2 to 4 people to focus on syllabus topics and prepare a power point presentation or a detailed dissertation to be discussed in class. successful, the dissertation replaces the interview .

Language certifications:
The written test will be weavered for students whose B2 proficiency in the Spanish language has been certified by an official entitiy during the previous 2. If in possession of said certification, they will notify their tutor and provide evidence of their title.

Students must show they know the main morphosyntactic features of the Spanish language and understand texts in Spanish, including non-generic ones.

Students will demonstrate their ability to choose those language registers that best suit the situational context proposed by the teacher.
