Course description

Analysis of principal digital communications systems using Matlab.

Knowledge and understanding:
Knowledge of digital communications techniques and their characteristics. Knowledge of techniques for channel identification and equalization.

Applying knowledge and understanding:
Capability to apply results of digital communications theory and techniques of channel identification and equalization to communications systems. Capability to
implement the results in Matlab/Octave.

Making judgements:
Capability to choose the best modulation technique for a given communication system.

Communication skills:
Capability to present the contents of the course.

Learning skills:
Capability to elaborate, summarize and implement in Matlab/Octave the results.

Prerequisites

Contents of the courses Signal Theory, Random Phenomena, Electrical Communications.

Syllabus

Communications systems with digital modulation. Components of a digital communications system. A/D converter (sampler and quantizer). Coder. Modulator. Channel with additive noise. Equalizer. Demodulator-decisor-decoder. D/A Converter. Main digital modulation schemes M-PAM, M-PSK, M-FSK. Comparison among digital modulation techniques.

Channel identification and equalization. Matlab/Octave exercises.

Teaching Methods
