Course description

Upon completing the module, learners will be expected to:
develop basic transferable skills related to ICT;
develop a basic understanding of concepts, tools, and techniques of Computing;
achieve an awareness of relevant trends and developments in the field;
be able to diagnose autonomously simple malfunctions and know how to fix them
communicate information, ideas, and problems, adapting the language to the audience;
understand and use without difficulty a word processor and a spreadsheet.

Syllabus

There are five strands:
Fundamentals: algorithms, encoding, bit, multimedia, compression, security.
Architecture: hardware and software, Von Neumann model, CPU, memory, memory hierarchies, input and output, peripherals.
Operating Systems: services of an OS, virtualisation, layered model, processes, memory, I/O, devices, file system, bootstrap, commonly used OSes, MS Windows.
Word: text and appearance, word processing objects, select text and objects, change their appearance, styles, check spelling, equations, revisions.
Excel: cells, values and appearance, formulas, functions, absolute, relative, and mixed references, charts.

Textbooks

Learners should preferably collate material from different sources. A good starting point is

Information Technology: the Breaking Wave - Dennis Curtin, Kunal Sen, Kim Foley, Cathy Morin - McGraw-Hill.

Learning assessment

Final exam consisting in a written test, comprising 15 multiple-answer questions, to be completed in 20 minutes. Each correct answer is awarded 2 points, incorrect answers get 0. Minimum passing score 18/30. Attending students will be offered the opportunity of taking a sample test.
