The main educational objectives of the course are related to the correct knowledge of ship plants, with particular reference to bilge, fire-fighting and ballast water systems, as well as to the required procedures for onboard fire containment. Besides, the course focuses on the maintenance of ship safety, with reference to both safe navigation and ship damage stability. The skills of reading both schemes and drawings for a correct and safe ship management represent further educational goals, to be reached during the course by discussing several plants of existing ships.
Knowledge and understanding: Students shall prove to know the main topics related to the safety of ship and navigation, with reference to the management of onboard plants, the required procedures for fire containment and extinguishing, the safe navigation, also in damage conditions, as well as the skills of reading the drawings and schemes required for a correct and safe ship management.
Ability to apply knowledge and understanding: Students shall prove to apply the acquired topics and theoretical proficiencies, required to maintain and increase the safety level onboard.
Judgment autonomy: Students shall autonomously evaluate and assess the main hazards onboard, depending on ship type, and shall be capable of applying the corrective actions to increase the safety levels, if required.
Communicative Skills: Students shall acquire the skill of reading the schemes of main onboard plants, to assure a safety navigation, describing relevant basic principles.
Learning Skills: Students shall be capable of continuously update their skills, by reading books, articles and rules (mainly in English), in order to acquire a good capacity of enhancing the own knowledge in the field of safety of ship and navigation.
