Course description

The main educational objectives of the course are related to the correct knowledge of ship plants, with particular reference to bilge, fire-fighting and ballast water systems, as well as to the required procedures for onboard fire containment. Besides, the course focuses on the maintenance of ship safety, with reference to both safe navigation and ship damage stability. The skills of reading both schemes and drawings for a correct and safe ship management represent further educational goals, to be reached during the course by discussing several plants of existing ships.

Knowledge and understanding: Students shall prove to know the main topics related to the safety of ship and navigation, with reference to the management of onboard plants, the required procedures for fire containment and extinguishing, the safe navigation, also in damage conditions, as well as the skills of reading the drawings and schemes required for a correct and safe ship management.

Ability to apply knowledge and understanding: Students shall prove to apply the acquired topics and theoretical proficiencies, required to maintain and increase the safety level onboard.

Judgment autonomy: Students shall autonomously evaluate and assess the main hazards onboard, depending on ship type, and shall be capable of applying the corrective actions to increase the safety levels, if required.

Communicative Skills: Students shall acquire the skill of reading the schemes of main onboard plants, to assure a safety navigation, describing relevant basic principles.

Learning Skills: Students shall be capable of continuously update their skills, by reading books, articles and rules (mainly in English), in order to acquire a good capacity of enhancing the own knowledge in the field of safety of ship and navigation.

Prerequisites

Even if not mandatory, it is suggested to have passed the exams of Architettura e Statica della Nave I and Tecnologia delle Costruzioni ed Allestimento Navale.

Syllabus

-Bilge, fire-fighting and ballast water plants: basics and schemes.
-Fire classification and development. Plants for fire detection, alarm and extinguishing. Extinguishing agents and main properties. Fixed and mobiles fire extinguishing plants.
-Fire protection according to SOLAS. Fire plants on board of passenger and cargo ships. Fire insulation and main escape plants.
-Inert gas systems and autonomous generators.
-Crude oil washing. Flammability diagrams. Inert gas system detectors.
-Watertight compartment and subdivision. Watertight doors and manoeuvring plants. Basic schemes for local, remote and emergency manoeuvring of sliding watertight doors.
-Safety of ship during the navigation. COLREG 1972. Marpol 73/78. LSA Code. IGC Code. CSC Code.
-Probabilistic damage stability. Attained and required subdivision indexes. Probability of flooding of a compartment or a group of compartments.
-Analysis of schemes of existing ships. Bilge, fire-fighting and ballast water plants. Fire insulation. Safety Plan.

The course deals with the basic elements concerning the layout of the main water (bilge, fire-fighting and ballast water) and hydraulic oil plants, as well as the safe technical management of the main ship typologies. Besides, it also focuses on the main national and international technical rules about the safety of ship and navigation.

Learning assessment

The exam consists of verifying the achievement of the previously defined educational goals, by an oral examination during which students shall discuss several plant schemes of existing ships, to evaluate the autonomous capacity of reading and comprehension.
