Course description

The course is finalized in order to let the students acquire the knowledge of theoretical and practical fundamentals of Marine Biology, with particular reference to the Mediterranean marine environment through the analyses of the main physico-chemical parameners characterizing the plant and animal components (pleuston, plankton, benthos e nekton).
Study of Mediterranean Biodiversity through the main marine biocoenoses, allochthonous species, rare and protected species. Perturbating factors (natural and anthropic), including the effects on biocoenoses and species; evaluation of most appropriate methods to contrast them.

Prerequisites

A general knowledge of previous General Biology, Zoology and Botany courses, is compulsory.

Syllabus

Introduction. Physico-Chemical and hydrodynamic characterists of seawater. Biological needs of marine organisms.
Pleuston. Plankton. Plankton sampling.
Nekton. Cartilagineous Fish, Teleosts.
Benthos. Soft-bottom and hard-bottom benthic organisms. Bioconstructions.
Vertical and Horizontal Zonation. Symbioses. Bioluminescence. Concepts of marine
biogeography. Allochthonous Species.
Protected Habitats and biocoenoses. Elements of coastal management strategies. Natural and anthropic causes of environmental alterations and possible remediation measures.

The topics treated in this course are related to the study of theoretical and practical fundaments of Marine Biology with particular emphasis on the Mediterranean Sea. The students will acquire knowledge on the main geological and physico-chemical parameters influencing the marine environment biota
(plankton, benthos, nekton and pleuston).
Concept of mediterranean biodiversity through the study of the main habitats, allochthonous species, protected and rare species. Perturbation and factors related: anthropic and/or natural, with their effects onbiocoenoses and species.
Evaluation of methods to fight marine pollution. Marine Protected Areas.
