Course description

The student must know the history of doping, the list of prohibited substances, the national and international regulations, the legislation in force, the penalties provided, the procedures of controls, the desired effects and the short and long-term adverse effects of the drugs used, the routes of administration. It must also be able to frame the doping phenomenon and related issues in the current socio-cultural context. This course aims to provide basic knowledge concerning the pharmacological, toxicological and ethical aspects of drugs unlawfully used in sports practice.

Prerequisites

Notions of pharmacology, human biology and human physiology.

Syllabus

TARGETS:
The student must know the history of doping, the list of prohibited substances, the national and international regulations, the legislation in force, the penalties provided, the procedures of controls, the desired effects and the short and long-term adverse effects of the drugs used, the routes of administration. It must also be able to frame the doping phenomenon and related issues in the current socio-cultural context. This course aims to provide basic knowledge concerning the pharmacological, toxicological and ethical aspects of drugs unlawfully used in sports practice.
Prerequisites:
Notions of pharmacology, biology and physiology.
CONTENTS
Definition of doping, etymology of doping, history of doping, epidemiology of doping at a professional level, amateur and among adolescents, aspects of the problem; psychological motivations of the phenomenon; the scandals; the risk. Classification of substances and methods of doping. Mechanisms of action of doping substances, anabolic steroids, insulin, GH growth hormone, other EPO hormones (erythropoietin) and blood doping, muscle growth factors and their use as doping, genetic doping. Supplements adapted to sports activity, effects of different doping substances on sports performance, adverse reactions of doping substances, WADA tasks, anti-doping methods, Italian legislation on doping, supplements, classification of food supplements adapted to intense muscular effort , principles of nutrition, effects of supplements on performance: scientific evidence, adverse reactions from food supplements, mechanisms of dehydration and consequences on performance and health. Uses and conventional therapeutic dosages of these agents compared to their use in doping.
