Course description

The aim of the course is to provide the student with the knowledge of the pathogenetic, molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying some of the frequently recognized human diseases.
The reactions to the different causes of the disease will be treated, the morphological alterations that these cause in the cells and in the tissues with the functional consequences for the organism. The role of physical activity on the main chronic diseases will be analyzed.

Prerequisites non-binding are basic concepts of biology, biochemistry, anatomy and physiology.

Cellular damage: Causes of cellular damage. Mechanisms of cell damage. Cell adaptation. Reversible and irreversible damage. Necrosis. Apoptosis.
Acute inflammation: Definition and causes of acute inflammation. Stages of acute inflammation. The cells of acute inflammation. The chemical mediators of inflammation. Types of acute inflammation and of exudate.
Chronic inflammation: Classification, causes and types of chronic inflammation. Cells of chronic inflammation. Typical lesions of chronic inflammation. Granulomas.
Systemic phenomena associated with inflammation.
