Course description

The course aims to provide the fundamental knowledge on the neurophysiology of human movement in order to understand the neurological bases of movement in physiological and pathological conditions. In particular, the course aims to provide in-depth elements of biomechanics of walking and especially the methods of analysis with particular regard to gait analysis in 3D
The training objective is to provide knowledge aimed at understanding in detail the biomechanical characteristics of walking. In addition, the student must learn the main analysis techniques in order to apply them to the most diverse operational contexts such as sports, re-education or bio-ergonomics.


The required prerequisites relate to basic knowledge of the pathophysiology of the nervous system that are generally acquired during the three-year course. In addition, physics and mathematics knowledge is required of upper-middle school level


Anatomo-physiology of the central nervous system: reflex, rhythmic, postural, voluntary motor activity; pyramidal system; extrapyramidal system; cerebellar system; musculoskeletal system; proprioceptive system; nociceptive system.
Neurophysiology of physical exercise: correlation between physical activity and cognition; molecular bases of cognition; molecular bases of physical exercise; alteration of molecular pathways.
Learning and memory: main forms of memory and learning; anatomophysiological bases and molecular and cellular profile; main theories on motor learning.
Elements of kinematics and geometry: position; speed; acceleration; Strength; moments. Reference systems; plans; spaces; vector spaces; corners; geometric optics.
Elements of biomechanics: cycle of the step; joints of the lower limb, function of the entire lower limb; joints of the upper limb, function of the entire upper limb.
Motion Capture and Motion Analysis: history of movement analysis; stereophotogrammetry; main differences between video analysis and motion capture systems. Applications in the physiological and pathological path.
Laboratory - Motion analysis hardware and software: Qualisys Track Manager & Visual3D (tracking, modeling, step step identification, report, processing).

Knowledge and ability to understand: the student must demonstrate knowledge of the essential elements of neurophysiology of human movement with particular regard to the aspects related to walking. In particular, he will have to know the biomechanical aspects of walking and the main techniques of gait analysis
Ability to apply knowledge and understanding: the student must demonstrate to be able to use the theoretical knowledge acquired in order to apply them in the field of motor and sport rehabilitation, especially in the context of a multidisciplinary team.
Autonomy of judgment: the student must be able to deepen the knowledge acquired by integrating them with those learned in the other disciplines of the course of study.
Communication skills: the student must demonstrate that he / she is appropriately expressed within the lexicon of neuroscience and more generally must demonstrate that he / she uses the scientific language adequately.
Learning skills: the student must demonstrate that he has understood the topics of the course through the discussion in the classroom on the individual topics of the program

Learning assessment

The assessment of learning uses: 1) specific meetings carried out in the form of a comparison open to the contribution of each participant; 2) individual verification to determine the degree of learning, in the form of multiple choice quizzes and open-ended questions; 3) final exam, carried out orally, to evaluate learning through structured exposure to questions concerning the covered topics.
