The course is meant to provide students with language content and related study skills necessary to improve their knowledge of grammar, syntax and specialised lexis as well as their communicative skills in English L2 for economics and finance. The lectures will be held in English. The communicative approach will be adopted in order to promote the development of oral and written comprehension and production skills for effective communication in English for economics and finance at B2/C1 CEFR level.
Expected learning outcomes
Knowledge and understanding:
At the end of the course, the students will have developed suitable knowledge and communicative skills so that they will be able to read, understand and reword articles taken from specialised business newspapers and magazines. They will have acquired the competences to read, understand and reword texts taken from business publications. They will be able to follow and understand oral presentations and conversations about economics and finance.
Applying knowledge and understanding: The students will be able to understand and translate texts similar to the ones they have studied as well as to take part in oral interactions about economics and finance.
Making judgements: The students will be able to select the suitable structures and terminology to produce written as well as to translate specialised texts and to interact in oral conversations about economics and finance.
Communication: The students will be able to communicate effectively in field-specific interactions and to produce messages and reports using suitable business discourse features.
Capacità di apprendimento: The students will be able to work both autonomously and in groups to achieve communicative goals, such as making oral presentations in English for economics and finance using mind maps or virtual presentation tools. They will also able to consolidate their knowledge of the proposed contents and to improve their skills by studying extra suggested materials autonomously.
Communicative competences at B1 CEFR Level.
Communicative functions relating to the contents of the Degree Program, such as communication and business relationships, international marketing, business success, risk, finance, business startups, customer service, mergers and acquisitions, Brexit implications. Lexis and grammar: idioms, noun compounds and noun phrases, multi-word verbs, prefixes, adverbs of degree, dependent prepositions, present and past tenses, gerunds and infinitives, future tenses and modals to express prediction and probability.
The course will consist of traditional lectures and workshops based on cooperative learning and roleplaying.
The students will also have the opportunity to improve their skills and competences through extra material provided during the course or through suitable activities available at the ad hoc section of the Parthenope University e-learning platform.

The students’ learning progress will be assessed during the course through ad hoc oral activities as well as a mid-course written test consisting of structured and semi-structured questions.
The summative examination will consist of both a written and an oral test. The written test will include several sections encompassing multiple-choice questions to assess the reading comprehension of a business text, and other matching, blank-filling, completion or multiple-choice tasks to check the knowledge of useful grammar contents and business-related lexis. The oral test will be based on the discussion of business texts and business conversations, as well as on the translation of short business passages.
