Course description

The purpose of the course is to develop knowledge and capabilities to natural environment effect on business management, at both strategical and operative level.
Knowledge and understanding
Students should know and understand the reciprocal effect of business management activities and natural environment and the possible solutions to manage such connection.
Students should know and understand the impact of green management on business performances and firms’ competitive advantage. Students should know the main drivers of green management and how they affect the green strategy.
Applying knowledge and understanding
At the end of the course, students should be able to identify the different methods and strategies to green re-designing business value chain, to assess the right instruments to communicate company’s green efforts in order to meet stakeholders’ expectations.
Making judgments
At the end of the course, students need to develop the ability to interpret and critic theoretical models, and to decide the models and techniques, which are more useful in specific situations.
Communication skills
Students need to be able to answer in a precise and reasoned way to the questions posed during the written and the oral exam, using appropriate terminology.
Lifelong learning skills
In order to pass the exam, students need to demonstrate their capability to learn the different topics, and to discuss them also considering different and independently bibliographical resources.
At the end of the course, students should be able to apply previous knowledge on specific case studies in order to improve the interdisciplinary connection among different topics.

Prerequisites

Formally none; knowledge of basic management theoretical models

Syllabus

Although the length of each section depends on the background of the class, normally the content will be divided into 4 different blocks as follows:
I track (16 hours): Natural environment, macro and micro economics theory, the main theoretical approach of green management
II track (16 hours): Basics of business management. Threats and opportunities from natural environment to business management. Why companies go green. Green strategy definitions and taxonomies.
III track (16 hours) Identify Eco-Risks and Opportunities- - Assess and Measure Environmental Impacts

Introduction to business management – Competitive strategies – Value chain activities – Analysis of the level of competition within an industry - Introduction to green management – Macro and Micro perspectives of environmental management – Theoretical foundation of green management - Identify Eco-Risks and Opportunities- - Assess and Measure Environmental Impacts

Teaching Methods

The course will be organized in frontal lessons. To encourage learning, students are invited to view the material on the e-learning platform.
Theoretical arguments will be supported by the presentation of case studies and by corporate testimonials. Frontal lessons will be supported by slides but also by video footage.
The analytical approaches are illustrated based on planning problems in practice and their understanding is deepened with case studies, simulations, etc. Moreover, specific management problems in applying these approaches are examined.

Learning assessment

All students will undertake a test examination, articulated in a written test consisting of open questions on the topics of the program, and an oral exam.
Written examination wants to verify students’ knowledge on the theoretical foundation of green management, the knowledge of the main driver above it, the understanding of the risks and opportunities that come from natural environmental.
Oral examination wants to verify students’ capabilities to apply theoretical knowledge on case study. The vote in 30/30 will be the result of the two tests.

In itinere evaluation is also provided with simulation without any formal evaluation.
