Course description

The course of "Organization of Cultural Events" aims to allow participants acquiring in-depth knowledge of events theme, in particular cultural events, which represent a topic of great relevance in the panorama of leisure. In fact, scholars and business operators recognize an increasing importance of cultural events in the policies of territorial development and tourism promotion. The ultimate goal is to allow participants to acquire notions, knowledge and skills making them:
• to be able to understand the advantages and disadvantages of practices designed to effectively plan and manage cultural events;
• to be able to consciously apply the planning and management policies of cultural events at any level of organizational analysis, micro (human resource management or in general management of inter-individual relationships among all the actors involved in the process of organizing and managing events), meso (definition of organizational configuration models for cultural events), macro (adopting a reticular approach with networking to plan, organize and manage cultural events).
Overall, the course aims to forge competent professional figures in analyzing, planning, organizing and managing cultural events, focusing the attention on organizational dynamics capable of making cultural events a lever of territory promotion and tourism in general.
1) Knowledge and ability to understand.
The student must demonstrate to have acquired a basic knowledge about the main concepts and policies of planning and management of cultural events, with particular focus on relational and conflict dynamics, and on the topics of leadership and project management and event management, adopting an organizational reading perspective in order to identify and apply tools and policies able to effectively and efficiently plan and manage cultural events for each actor involved (micro: event manager; meso: organization responsible for managing cultural events; macro: network of organizations for cultural events).
The student must demonstrate the ability to grasp the interconnections between the different constructs and the different perspectives of analysis of the same, in line with the issues illustrated and the stimuli provided during the course, the seminars and the exercises.
2) Ability to apply knowledge and understanding.
The student must be able to apply the concepts learned to specific cases and specific contexts, with a concrete and current response in the tourism sector, where the sub-segment of cultural events arises, demonstrating the now complete and acquired knowledge and understanding about the fundamental principles of study of planning, organization and management of cultural events. The exercises aim to develop and verify these application skills.
3) Autonomy of judgment.
The student must be able to express his/her own point of view assuming positions argued according to a scientific logic and his own personal intuition, consonant and sustainable in relation to the topics covered by the course.
4) Communication skills.
The student must know how to express himself/herself with the properties of language and awareness of their emotional experiences that emerge from non-verbal language.
5) Learning skills.
The student must be able to construct clear and comprehensive mental maps for each conceptual category included in the exam program in relation to the individual constructs concerning the study of the organization of cultural events, using the nomenclatures characteristic of the discipline.

Prerequisites

Knowledge of the fundamentals of the Organization Theory (micro, meso and macro level of organizational analysis).

Syllabus

The orientation of this class will be both theoretical and practical approach, focusing on the development of concepts and operational strategies that contribute to the effective development of policies and operating practices through which the manager, more specifically the event manager, can effectively and efficiently plan , organize and manage cultural events by motivating and stimulating their collaborators and creating an effective and knowledgeable network of actors involved in the process of organizing and managing cultural events.
The course topics are related to two major classes:
1) -Part 1: 24 h- The strategic importance of organizing and managing cultural events in a perspective of promoting and developing the territory and tourism in general. Different levels of organizational analysis (micro, meso and macro) are being investigated to enable the creation of professional figures (event managers) capable of planning and managing cultural events in their entirety (recruitment and selection of staff dedicated to cultural events, staff training, planning the entire process of organizing and managing cultural events, decision-making processes for cultural events, organizational and relational dynamics emerging among the organizations involved in the organization and management of cultural events);
2) -Part 2: 24 h- Project management and event management approaches focusing on cultural events.

Teaching Methods

Lectures, seminar meetings to present concrete business cases with selected testimonials of the tourism sector with focus on cultural events, exercises in the classroom about the organization of cultural events, development of one final project work.

Learning assessment

Written examination divided into four open five-point questions each, and a ten-point open question, related to the topics listed in the program.
Oral examination (for candidates who pass the test with a score of at least 18/30), that consists into questions that start from any gaps in the written examination, then regarding the other topics in the program.
Written and oral examinations aim at verifying the level of learning of the principles, notions and topics listed in the program.
This examination will be conducted on the basis of the following criteria: level of knowledge and depth of study regarding principles of the organization of cultural events; Language properties and exhibit clarity.

3. Methods of administration (written, oral, practical): written and oral examionation
4. Timetable: according to the exam schedule
5. Duration: written test 1 hour; Oral test for about 10 to about 30 minutes
6. Type (e.g. written test, practical test, interview, etc ...): written test to open answers + oral examination
7. Final Examination: The student will achieve the minimum score if he/she can demonstrate the acquisition of basic knowledge related to the organization of cultural events. The student will get the highest score when he/she demonstrates that he/she has understood, thoroughly and introjected all the topics listed in the program, also being able to grasp the interconnections between them, and to provide concrete application examples in relation to their practical implications.
