Course description

By learning the geography of tourism, the student:
- will include the evolutionary process of the tourist phenomenon on an international scale;
- will acquire the ability to analyze the distributional aspects linked to tourist demand and supply in a geographical key
- will have to show critical abilities to interpret the possibilities of development of the current structures through policies at local and global scales.

Prerequisites

Knowledge of the basic concepts of economics.

Syllabus

The course will focus first of all on the general aspects of Tourism Geography in terms of tourism demand and offer and related movement of flows. Then the examination of tourism policies and the problems linked to the evolution of the tourist market in the web 2.0. The main organizational-territorial models will be highlighted below and the paradigm of sustainability in the organization of tourist spaces will be explored. Other topics will be: tourist districts, tourism marketing and destination branding, cultural heritage. A second part of the course will focus on the examination of the Italy case. Italy's position in the national and international tourist market. The types of tourism prevalent in Italy.

The history of tourism. Tourist demand and offer. Distances, transport and communication routes. Tourism and political geography. Local tourism systems. Types of tourism. Tools for environmental protection and tourism enhancement. Tourism and image.

Frontal lessons. Review of case studies.

Learning assessment

At the end of the course, the verification test will consist of a written exam, structured in order to evaluate the achievement of the educational objectives by the student. For the students, research projects could be carried out on a topic agreed together in the classroom. The written test consists of 10 open-ended questions, for which 1 H and 30 minutes of time is made available to students, to which the student must answer by exposing concepts and models learned during the course. Each question is evaluated by 0 points, in case it is a wrong or missing answer, up to a maximum of 3 points. It is not allowed to consult texts or use PCs, smartphones or support devices.
