Course description

The course aims to provide students the methodology tools for understanding the operation, the architecture and the performance of the fluid machinery used for the marine propulsion. Thus, the course will be devoted to deep the knowledge on the energy conversions systems such as steam turbines systems, gas turbines systems and internal combustion engines.
The course, according to the topic dealt with, will furnish some competencies required by the STCW Convention, as amended, for Deck Officers and Marine Engineers at Operational Level, embodied in the MIT decree dated 19th December 2016, namely “Percorso formativo per accedere alle figure professionali di Allievo Ufficiale di Coperta e Allievo Ufficiale di Macchina”.

Prerequisites

The student has to know the main contents of the courses of Applied thermodynamics and heat transfer:
- Thermodynamic properties
- Thermodynamics laws and their application for the analysis of the energty conversion systems

Syllabus

The course deals with propulsion systems and mechanical components on board ships (48 h)
In detail:

- Introduction on Turbomachinery (6 h)
Classification of fluid machines and their applications. Euler’s equation. Degree of reaction (or reaction ratio. Turbomachinery with degree of reaction equal to 0 or higher than 0. Profiles and velocity triangles.

- Basic principles on the construction and operation of marine diesel engine (18 h)
Reference cycles: Diesel cycle and Otto cycle. Four stroke and two stroke engines. The combustion in diesel engines. Fuels for marine engines. Air supercharging. The effect of the supercharging in Diesel engines. Exhaust-gas Turbocharging. Injection systems. Lubrication systems. Steering systems in propulsion systems with diesel engines and their control.

Basic principles on the construction and operation of steam turbines and gas turbine for marine applications (24 h)
Rankine Cycle. Hirn cycle. Methods for increasing the efficiency: Reheating Rankine cycle, regenerative steam turbine plant. Actual cycles. Foster-Wheeler boiler, Babcok & Wilcox marine boiler. Smoke Tube Boiler. Water Tube Boiler.
Joule Cycle. Efficiency and power production in the Joule cycle. Actual cycle. Regenerative, intercooling and post-combustion configurations. Combined cycle configurations.

Teaching Methods

The teaching includes theoretical lessons and exercises in the classroom. The exercises will be performed together and a discussion on the results will be carried out.

Learning assessment

The exam, which lasts about 30 minutes, consists of an oral test during which the level of knowledge of both the main issues related to the operating conditions and construction of marine propulsion systems and detailed information related to auxiliary systems will be assessed. In addition, the ability in explaining the conceptual aspects and the mastery in the oral presentation of the arguments will be also taken into account.
