Course description

Given that the term "Preservation"refers to indirect actions aimed to guarantee material heritage temporal continuity, and the term "Restoration" refers to technical-scientific interventions on this heritage, having recognized it as bearer of values to be transmitted to the future, the course aims to provide the theoretical and operational skills related to intervention techniques on the historic built heritage and landscape, with particular regard to the problems related to coastal landscapes, moving from the knowledge of the evolution of the debate on architectural restoration, deepened in its historical-critical aspects, in order to make the student culturally aware of the specifics and problems in relation to the intervention on the existing heritage and its meaning as a cultural testimony and, at the same time, as a resource for contemporary use.

- Knowledge and understanding:
The student will be able to know and to understand the issues related to the preservation, and restoration of the historic built heritage and landscape, with particular in-depth analysis of the aspects relating to the more strictly coastal areas, together with the main restoration theories and the criteria required for conservation, acquiring a particular sensitivity on the recognition of the pre-eminently 'cultural' value of the depositary objects of the intervention.

- Ability to apply knowledge and understanding:
At the end of the course of study, the student must demonstrate the ability to integrate scientific and humanistic knowledge, as a synthesis of the same discipline of restoration and, consequently, ability to apply the theoretical guidelines and the methodology acquired in the restoration design on a building scale and/or on territorial/landscape scale as a final test.

-Autonomy of judgment:
The student must have learned the necessary tools for the recognition, in an autonomous way, of the historical, aesthetic-formal, technical and material values, etc., present in the historical built heritage, integrated in turn in the landscape, as a premise to the exercise of a critical judgment understood as foundation of an culturally conscious and technically wise design approach. The student will also have the ability to compare the solutions adopted with the various current orientations of the restoration and be able to critically argue the choices made in relation to the materials and techniques used.

- Communication ability:
The student will have to present and articulate in a project and oral form, with appropriate scientific terminology, a project developed in group, in which the aims, methods, tools and tools of the restoration/conservation design will be put into practice. The student should be able to illustrate project drawings to an untrained public in a clear and complete manner.

-Learning ability:
Based on lectures and on-site surveys, the student must demonstrate that he/she has learned particular skills in relation to reading and recognition of historic built heritage and landscape, in the reality of their material stratification, with particular regard to the knowledge of the problems of the coastal areas and, demonstrating to reflect on the specificities of the training path based on conservative goals. The student will have to demonstrate the acquisition of methodologies to learn the future developments of the discipline.

Prerequisites

Basic knowledge on the preservation of cultural heritage and landscape with basic concepts of urban / territorial planning.

Syllabus

The course is divided into a series of modules closely interrelated from the theoretical and methodological point of view:

1. THEORIES AND HISTORY OF RESTORATION (12 hours of lessons)
2. CURRENT ISSUES IN ARCHITECTURAL AND LANDSCAPE RESTORATION (10 hours of lessons)
3. THE RESTORATION DESIGN (14 hours of lessons and 10 hours of exercise)
4. RESTORATION TECHNIQUES OF BUILT HERITAGE (8 hours of lesson and 8 hours of exercise)
5. LEGISLATIVE ASPECTS OF CULTURAL HERITAGE AND LANDSCAPE PRESERVATION (10 hours of lessons)

Teaching Methods

Lectures with power point presentations. Exercises. Periodic verification of the progress of the design of the year. Inspections on sites of interest.

Learning assessment

The exam consists in verifying the level of achievement of the previously training objectives. The exam takes place through an oral form in which the acquisition of the theoretical aspects dealt during the teaching course will be evaluated. It will also be verified
the criteria used in the restoration design.
