Course description

The objective of the course is to provide students with the knowledge to perform stability checks in rock slopes and to design landslide risk mitigation interventions.

Syllabus

Presentation of the course objectives (2 hours of lessons). Definition of a rock mass; discontinuities; orientation; other characteristics of discontinuities; survey techniques of discontinuities; techniques of representation of discontinuities (10 hours of lessons + 6 of exercises). Landslide mechanisms in rock masses; planar sliding; sliding of a wedge; overturning; collapse (8 hours of lessons + 6 of exercises). Propagation of landslides in rock masses: rolling blocks and bouncing (6 hours of lessons and 6 hours of training). Stabilization interventions: nailing; anchorages; networks; cables (6 hours of lessons and 4 hours of training). Protection measures: Rockfall barriers; rockfall tunnels; embankments and ditches for rockfall. (6 hours of lessons + 4 of exercises). Sea action on the stability of the rock slopes (4 hours of lessons)
