NUMERICAL CARTOGRAPHY AND GIS WITH LAB
The course is aimed to provide students with pratical use of principles, methods and tools at the base of Numerical Cartography and Geographic Information System (GIS). For consequence, there is the use of software for carrying out some basic operations.
Knowledge and understanding: The student must demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the principles, methods and tools of Numerical Cartography and the GIS needed to solve practical problems in navigation, relief and representation.
Ability to apply knowledge and understanding: The student must demonstrate how to use the theoretical and practical concepts of Numerical Cartography and the GIS to support navigation, relief and representation.
Judging autonomy: Students must be able to independently evaluate situations that are different from the standard ones presented by the teacher during the course and to adopt the best methodologies.
Communicative Skills: The student must have the ability to develop and present topics related to the application of Numerical Cartography and GIS using the technical-scientific language correctly.
Learning Skills: The student must be able to update continuously through the consultation of texts and publications in order to acquire the ability to deepen the topics in the field of Numerical Cartography and GIS.
It is useful to have already assimilated the knowledge provided by the courses of: Mathematical Analysis 1 and Physics 1. The course is to be considered as the integral part of the course "Numerical Cartography and GIS".
The applications with free and open source GIS software (24 hours) concern the following topics.
Comparison between reading of paper cartography and the use of digital cartography; use of GIS software; vectorization; association of databases to vector cartography; query and selection from GIS database; DTM construction with TIN and Inverse Distance Weighted interpolators; design and implementation of GIS for territorial and environmental applications.
The course includes applications with free and open source GIS software (24 hours).
The Course includes exercises in computer lab, using free and open source GIS software.

The objective of the examination is to check the level of achievement of the training goals previously indicated.
The student is called to describe practical aspects of the course as well as to explain how resolve exercises concerning the laboratory applications using Digital mapping and GIS software free and open source. During the oral examination of the exercises that have been assigned in advance to the student, the ability to expose the subjects studied, and to link and compare different aspects considered during the course is evaluated.
Exercises are in Italian. The professor is fluent in English and is available to interact with students in English, also during the examination.
