Course description

To teach students the basics of pharmacology so that they can make their own basic concepts important for understanding the risks and benefits associated with knowledge, the use of drugs and drugs of abuse. The course analyzes the drugs that can be used and those prohibited for sporting activities, mechanisms of action, the generation of effects, pharmacokinetics and adverse drug reactions.
Know the drugs most used in sports and which of these are prohibited by WADA;
To evaluate through which mechanisms some drugs can interfere with sports performance, with particular regard to the occurrence of adverse events;
Evaluating whether and how the performance of a sport can change the individual response to drugs taken for therapeutic purposes;
and the following specific objectives:
Acquire a critical ability on the use of drugs in sports both as therapeutic instruments and as doping substances;
Learn about the main drugs most used in sports (NSAIDs, respiratory and cardiovascular drugs, psychotropic drugs, vitamin and food supplements, anti-infectives): rational use and relative efficacy, therapeutic classes of belonging, interactions, mechanisms of action, tolerability and major adverse reactions, methods of employment in relation to sporting activity;

Prerequisites

General concepts of chemistry, biochemistry, physiology, human anatomy, general pharmacology

CONTENTS
The course foresees that the activity is carried out through lessons in which the following topics will be dealt with:
Main concepts of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics.
Classification of the drugs most used in sports.
Interaction between physical activity and pharmacological treatments in some very common diseases in the population.
The pharmacology of pain and motor activity: main classes of drugs used.

LEARNING CHECK
The exam is done through an oral test.
