Course description

The course is aimed to educate students about the work safety, giving them the basic knowledge about risks related to sport and physical activity, in order to allow them to play an active role in the prevention of these risks.

Knowledge and understanding ability: The student should demonstrate to know and understand health problems linked to health and safety in sport and physical activity settings.

Ability to apply knowledge and comprehension: The student should be able to use his knowledge to manage environmental and management issues in order to avoid health damages when engages his work.

Judgment autonomy: The student should be able to evaluate autonomously the different situations presented by the teacher during the examination and to apply what he learned in the fields of health promotion and prevention, considering the safety.

Communication ability: The student should be able to explain the issues learned in an easy but scientifically correct way, even in the form of a composition.

Learning ability: The student should be able to keep up to date continuously, becoming able to improve and enhance his knowledge about hygiene, prevention and safety through an independent educational path, by referring to texts and publications (also in English language).

Prerequisites

The student should have an adequate knowledge of cellular biology, human anatomy and physiology, and a basic knowledge of general, human and environmental hygiene.

Syllabus

1. OBIETTIVI FORMATIVI
The course is aimed to educate students about the work safety, giving them the basic knowledge about risks related to sport and physical activity, in order to allow them to play an active role in the prevention of these risks.

3. CONTENUTI DEL CORSO

Sport and health: physical activity as healthy lifestyle and prevention strategy for the main chronic diseases.
Hygiene and safety in sport: definitions of hazard, risk and injury applied to sport and physical activity.
Regulations about health and safety at work: tasks, duties and responsibilities of workers and employers; the competent doctor and the health monitoring.
Prevenzione e gestione dei rischi nello sport
- competition risks (epidemiology, risk factors and prevention of injuries; the injuries register)
-away game risks (traveller athletes, vaccinations of the athletes).
Health protection in agonistic and non-agonistic activities
-certifications for sport and physical activity
-first aid in sport facilities: the defibrillator.
Diet, supplements and doping
-metabolism and calorie needs in the athletes: training, preparation and competition
-nutritional principles
-nutritional supplements
-doping: principles and regulations for health protection; epidemiology of doping.

Risk and risk management
-risk management in sport and physical activity: physical, chemical, biological and cross risks
-risk control
-risk communication
-unexpected events and emergencies management; collective panic.
Safety of indoor spaces for sport and physical activity:
-physical, chemical and biological agents related to activities and procedures
-thermic, acoustic and visual wellbeing; principles of bioclimatology.
Quality and safety in facilities for sport and physical activity:
-structural, engineering, organizational and hygienical aspects of sports grounds, gyms, swimming pools, subsidiary spaces and support services, also in school setting
-technical and giuridical elements for the evaluation and certification of the quality of sport facilities.
The role of the movement sciences graduates.

Taught lessons; didactic exercises; working groups; questionnaires.

5. MODALITÀ DI VERIFICA DELL’APPRENDIMENTO
The learning verification is based on an oral examination aimed to evaluate the ability of the student in relating and comparing the different course issues. The aim of the examination is to verify the achievement of the course educational goals.

Lectures are in Italian. The professor is fluent in English and is available to interact with students in English, also during the examination.
