The course aims to deepen the study of production management and service delivery in single companies and along the supply chain. In particular, the processes and the main operating variables that impact on the management of production and business logistics are analyzed. The analysis also includes a spatio-temporal framework of the topics under study, through: a. an excursus on the evolution of the different models of management of goods and services that have occurred over time in response to changes in the competitive context of companies; b. a focus on the interdependencies between the operations function and the other main company functions present in the company.
In particular, the learning objectives of the course are: Knowledge and understanding: Understand the strategic role of operations & logistics in business management. Understand the differences among product and service operations processes. Acquire an overview on the contemporary issues and trend in operations and supply chain management.
Applying knowledge and understanding: : Develop ability to apply the knowledge acquired in different contexts (small, medium, big enterprises, in different production and service sectors).
Making Judgements: Critically evaluate the operations and supply chain strategies of real world organisations, in terms of stakeholder expectations and sustainable competitive advantage.
Communication skills: Communicate effectively (by using an appropriate vocabulary) in group discussions, oral presentations and written reports.
Learning skills: Develop the ability to autonomously deepen the acquired knowledge, knowing how to identify relevant bibliographic references.
Develop the ability to link the knowledge acquired in different disciplinary areas.
Develop the ability to think systemically to analyse operations management and logistics problems and propose processes and policies improvements.

The main themes of the course are:
Part 1- strategy and capacity, with a focus on efficiency and effectiveness, strategic capacity management and project management.
Part 2- manufacturing and service processes, analyzing the main characteristics and differences of these processes, and dealing with quality.
Part 3 - supply chain processes, focusing on lean supply chains and on logistics, distribution and transportation.
Part 4- supply and demand planning and control, analyzing the process of manufacturing and service planning and control from Forecasting, towards Sales and Operations Planning, analyzing Material Requirements Planning until workcenter scheduling.

For each topic, the main tools and techniques are presented. Case studies will be analysed and discusses in class.
Lectures and case discussion. Instructor will give lectures on major concepts and issues also using case studies and videos. Students will be asked to actively participate in all class discussions on multiple case studies.
Students will work in groups on case studies and give oral presentation of their projects.

Examination consists of written individual exam and oral exam. The final grade (maximum 30) depends on the two examination items that will take place at the end of the course.
