Course description

The objectives appear to be congruent with those provided by the Course of University on which it is incardinated (acquiring interdisciplinary training, deepening legal, economic, business subjects). The aim is to equip students with a critical capacity and a legal analysis of both legal systems and socio-economic, national and international events.
“Business History” aims to develop a knowledge and understanding of historical and economic phenomena related in particular to the development of national and ethical, public and private enterprises over the last two centuries, extending themes such as interrelationship with the different social, political, and legislative contexts, and the organization and management of enterprises.
At the end of the course students must demonstrate that they have acquired the following skills and abilities:
1- KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
A knowledge and understanding of topics structured in an economic-historical key for companies, both public and private, both in the Italian context and in contexts of other nations, not just European ones.
2. APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
 An ability to apply this knowledge and understanding to individual events and events, national and international, through the study and exemplification of precise historical events, always in relation to companies; in addition to the economic policy instruments and the legislative measures that regulate these companies.
3. MAKING JUDGMENTS:
 An autonomy of judgment relating to specific historical and economic issues that allows the development of a critical capacity of individual events and the correlation between historical events, economic events and different political, ideological and legislative contexts.
4. COMMUNICATION:
 A communicative ability that allows him to expose what has been learned through the use of a precise terminology of an economic type; this skill will be strengthened and stimulated also through the discussion in the classroom of the topics covered by the lessons, while at the same time encouraging greater depth and understanding of certain topics;
5. LIFELONG LEARNING SKILLS:
An ability to learn the topics of the teaching to be stimulated through the discussion in the classroom of the topics in question, as well as an offer of educational material, in line with the topics covered by the teaching.

Syllabus

The course deals with the enterprise as a fundamental institution for understanding the evolution of the economy, society and institutions over the past two centuries, through an analysis of different models of enterprises spread over different eras and different socio-cultural contexts. After providing the theoretical aspects of the subject, specifying the concepts of entrepreneur and enterprise, the different national corporate systems in contemporary times are compared, putting in light convergences and divergences of dimensional structures and organizational forms, and various dynamics evolution of the company and its relationship with the socio-economic, cultural and institutional. The course also addresses issues related to the management and corporate governance, to technical progress and innovations, the labor history (transformations in work, industrial and social conflicts), the public role of business in the modern world, to the most recent global impact of the crisis on the world of business.
Contents in lesson hours: Introduction to business history and theories of the economy on the theme of the company and the entrepreneur (6 hours); the company and the context, institutions, laws (8 hours); the historical evolution of dimensions and forms of companies (16 hours); management and governance of the company, organization (6 hours); the company and the work (4 hours); technical progress and marketing (4 hours); public enterprise: rise and decline (4 hours).

The course deals with the theme of business as a fundamental institution to understand the evolution of the economy, society and institutions over the last two centuries, through an analysis of the different business models spread in different eras and different socio-cultural contexts.
Content in lecture hours:
1. Introduction to business history and theories of economics on the theme of business and entrepreneurs (6 hours):
differences between the continental and Anglo-Saxon approaches; classical school; the nature of the company; business theory and history; neo-classical conception; dynamic-strategic conception.
2. the company and the context, the institutions, the laws (8 hours):
economy vs history; cultural factors; ethics and community; family and gender; education and research; public institutions and the state; the financial markets; anti-trust legislation.
3. the historical evolution of the dimensions and forms of companies (15 hours):
performance evaluation in historical perspective; longevity and profitability; the family business; the great managerial enterprise; the multinationals; business groups and industrial districts; cooperative enterprises.
4. the management and governance of the company, the organization (3 hours):
single-purpose, multi-functional organization (U-form); the multidivisional (M-form); Holding companies, networks and groups.
5. business and work (4 hours):
work in the Victorian enterprise; Taylorism and Fordism; toyotism; from a world of transport to the world of communications.
6. technical progress and marketing (4 hours):
business, innovation and R&D; marketing theory and history; the marketing mix; the evolution of distribution; public relations.
7. the public enterprise: rise and decline (8 hours):
the development of public intervention in the economy; the twentieth century: reasons and areas of nationalization; historical and national contexts; causes and objectives; the quantitative dimension; privatizations; the economic and industrial situation in Italy in the 21st century.

Learning assessment

The evaluation of the students takes place through the final exam to verify if the previously listed educational objectives have been achieved.
The mode is oral, and focuses on individual topics of discussion or questions structured on different topics to assess whether the student is able to connect and / or compare topics covered during the course.
The exam is a structured interview on questions (usually 3), and lasts about 15/20 minutes per student.
Specifically, the objective of the final exam is to verify the understanding of the topics covered, the acquisition of adequate skills - both historical-economic, linguistic, and the ability of an interdisciplinary vision of some themes - and of the final preparation inherent to the study and in-depth study of the topics covered by the teaching; all objectives include an assessment of the student's overall maturity and of the overall growth of his historical, legal and economic culture.
The final exam is measured in thirtieths (from eighteen to thirty).
