Course description

Through the learning of the fundamentals of Economic Geography, the student is asked to:
- understand through which process and how the distribution of human societies on the earth and the use of its resources have been determined;
- get the skills to analyze the main matters and problems of our contemporary world from a geographical point of view;
- develop his critical skills to recognize what are the chances to improve the current assets throughout local and global policies.

Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of economics concept

Syllabus

Basically the course concerning with the rudimentary concepts of Economic Geography (geographic space, vertical and horizontal relationships, economic region, etc.), will examine the relationship between geography and environment, population geography, the geography of agriculture and rural areas, of industry and industrial spaces, the dynamics of urban spaces and service activities ( transport and communications, trade, tourism).
Secondly the course program will aim to plunge into the study of “the Italian system”with a particular reference to the geo-economic situation of the country

Geographical space and economic space. Spatial geographical relationships and geographical regions. The sectors of economic activity from the primary to the quaternary. The impact of economic activities on the environment. The settlement structures. Metropolis and megalopolis. Aspects characterizing economic and social globalization.

Traditional lectures, analysis of case studies.

Learning assessment

A final assessment based on a written test will be possibly supplemented by an oral examination. For the students could be carried out periodic checks.
