Course description

At the end of the course, students should have:
- in -depth knowledge on the main morphological, cellular and molecular aspects induced by physical exercise;
- assessed the aspects and the mechanisms of physiological adaptation of the organism in response to physical exercise;
- studied the main serum markers related to sport and the main variations related to sports practice.

As part of the planned technical-practical activities, students should have:
- knowledge concerning the assessment of physical fitness as a tool to improve the health conditions of subjects during development and subjects with pathologies.
-knowledge concerning the use of food supplements in sports practice;
- in-depth knowledge of the main doping substances used in sport;
- acquired the main methods of analysis for their identification on different biological samples.

Prerequisites

Knowledge of the following topics is required: biochemical bases of intermediate metabolism; principles of physiology in sport.

Syllabus

- Lactate as a marker in sports
- Muscle as an endocrine organ
- CK and muscular disorders: myopathies
- Biochemical aspects of muscle fatigue
- The biochemical evaluation of oxidative stress in Sports Medicine
- Evaluation of the main biochemical and clinical markers in sport.
Bone tissue, peak bone mass, bone remodeling, markers of new bone formation and markers of bone resorption. Osteopenia / osteoporosis: markers
-Adipose tissue: composition of white and brown adipose tissue; metabolism and secretory function of white adipose tissue. Thermogenesis and uncoupling proteins. Dyslipidemias.
-Diabetes Mellitus- Definition; classification; pathogenetic mechanisms; complications; molecular markers; therapy; evaluation of the beneficial effects of physical activity on glycemic control and molecular markers

The contents of the frontal lectures are:

Learning assessment

The purpose of the exam is to verify the achievement of the previously indicated training objectives. The exam is carried out by administering a written test consisting of 15 multiple choice questions based on the informations provided during the practical technical lessons whose main contents are: the assessment of physical fitness as a tool to improve health conditions during development and in subjects with pathologies; food supplements in sports practice, doping substances in sports practice, techniques and doping control. The test lasts 30 minutes and the use of books, cell phones and notes are not allowed;
An oral exam will follow and will focus on verifying the knowledge related to the first part of the program: : Lactate; Muscle as an endocrine organ; CK and muscle diseases; muscular fatigue; biochemical assessment of oxidative stress, biochemical-clinical markers in physical exercise; bone tissue; adipose tissue; diabetes mellitus.

The score will be expressed out of thirty and will be the result of the average of the score in the written and oral tests.
