The educational objectives of the course are twofold. The first is to provide students with an introduction to the use of micro-based models used to analyse the complex relationship between the economic system, development and basic support provided by resources, with particular reference to environmental resources, and the economic agents' choices aimed at sustainable resource management. The second introduces elements for the application of the methods of economic evaluation of natural resources useful for placing environmental issues in the analysis of the functioning of the economic system.
For an adequate understanding of the course contents, it is necessary to have acquired and assimilated the fundamental concepts of microeconomics and macroeconomics
The course is divided into 3 modules, each consisting of 16 hours. The first module examines the possible relationships between the economic system and the environment through a comparison of empirical evidence from the real context. Development models are also addressed in line with the criteria of environmental sustainability. The second module offers an introduction to the use of micro models based on environmental economics in order to analyse market failures related to the efficiency of the allocation of environmental resources and the environmental sustainability strategies implemented by the public decision maker. In the third module the techniques of economic evaluation of environmental goods and resources are analysed. Specifically, direct and indirect approaches are addressed. In the context of direct approaches, a particular focus is reserved for multi-attribute assessment techniques based on the expressed preferences analysed with reference to empirical cases.

The course is carried out through lectures during which the program topics will be analysed. During the lessons, seminar discussions are scheduled by the students on possible application cases.

The objective of the exam is to evaluate the level of achievement of the training objectives. The exam includes a structured written test with open questions of an argumentative and analytical approach, aimed at assessing the degree of depth of general theoretical knowledge. Students will have to answer questions in order to show their ability to expose the appropriate technical contents, definitions, and basics acquired with their study with appropriate terminology. The written test consists of 5 questions. Each question is assigned a maximum of 6 points for a total of 30 points. The possibility of praise will be assigned to the student capable of showing a capacity for critical reworking of the knowledge acquired, and for having proceeded with an in-depth analysis of the issues dealt with outside the reference texts. The duration of the written test is fixed in 100 minutes.
Knowledge and understanding: at the end of the course the student has to show his ability to understand the economic problems relating to the exploitation of the stock of environmental goods and interpret the behaviour of economic agents with respect to their consumption and management; he has to show his knowledge of the main experimental methods and the economic assessment tools of natural resources.
Ability to apply knowledge and understanding: the student has to show that he has understood the knowledge acquired during the course and be able to combine it with operational skills in the interpretation and understanding of the factors that justify the choice decisions aimed at limiting the consumption of the environmental resources implemented by the institutions appointed.
Autonomy of judgment: the student has to show that he/she is able to the interpretation of economic agents' behaviours with respect to environmental issues, and to have acquired a critical spirit through participation in open debates with respect to the issues established.
Communication skills: the student must have the ability to correctly use economic terminology to dissert on the topics of the written test questions scheduled for the final exam, as well as to present the seminar discussions that will take place during the lessons. The language used will alternate the technical approach with the more merely popular one, through simplifications deriving from the demonstration of empirical cases too.
Learning skills: the student must have acquired a learning ability to achieve updates through the consultation of scientific texts and publications with reference to issues related to the management of environmental resources in the functioning of the economic system, appropriate in next investigations during the postgraduate training course.
