Course description

The ship is a complex system, rather it is the ensemble of complex systems that need to be reliable and perfectly integrated to reach the predetermined purpose that consists of developing a transportation device with various technical specifications and functionalities and very expensive. The assessment of the main technical specifications need to comply with the market requirements and the economic evaluation of the asset to be realised. The course aims to provide the basics required to assess the “mission profile”, that is clearly define which are the main findings of the new ship and the main features required to be competitive on the international market. Hence, the course aims to define the main requirements, functionalities, technical specifications and restraints of the new ship that need to be developed in the technical data sheets to be provided to the shipyard.

Syllabus

Course introduction. Definition of a ship. Ship classification. Nomenclature and basic definition. The ship main dimensions (length, breadth, depth, draught). Ship construction length. Length between perpendiculars. Hull surface, wetted surface, hull volume and displacements. The structures of steel ships: transverse, longitudinal and mixed configurations. Transverse reinforcements. Frame. Ship scantling plant. Ship capacity plan. The freeboard. Longitudinal and transverse compartments. Watertight bulkheads. Characteristic hull factors L/B e B/T. Reference values for different ship typologies. The hull form coefficients. Deadweight and tonnage. Displacement equation. Ship loading plan. The basic parameters of the ship design; capacity, speed and navigation range.

Introduction to the design process. Description and discussion of the main ship plants; hull forms, general plans, capacity plan; scantling plan. Classification of merchant ships and of ships based on relevant service at sea.

Ship enrolment in public register. The International Organizations: IMO, ILO, FAO. The main IMO conventions: SOLAS, MARPOL, ILLC, STCW; COLREG. The ISM Code and the SMS manual. The ship construction declaration. The ship registers. The bodies recognized by the Italian Governments. The main activities of the RINA Register and relevant certifications. Certification of class. Class notations: type of navigation, ship types.

The main requirements of the sea transportation: safety, time, regularity and frequency. Access to the energy resources: carbon, petroleum, LNG. The sea ways: routes, canals and straits.

Commodities: the goods onboard ships. Liquid and bulk cargoes. Angle of repose. Classification of the main good typologies. The sea transportation by means of containers and the containerships.

SHIP MANAGEMENT (MOD. 1)
Ship Classification:
Starting from the rule classification, the main ship typologies are defined focusing on relevant characteristics in terms of classification (type of buoyancy, navigation, propulsion, service). Basic requirements of transportation: safety, time, regularity and frequency. Access to the energy resources: carbon, petroleum, LNG. The sea ways: routes, canals and straits.

Commodities: the goods onboard ships.

The mission profile: a complete examination of the various issues to be monitored in the preliminary ship design phase is performed: hull form selection, ship structures, propellers, organization and layout of the onboard spaces, electrical power required for the onboard services, steering and manoeuvring plants, stowage plants, navigation services, safety systems, anchoring, mooring that constitute the entirety of a ship plant.
