Education objectives: The main educational objectives of the course are related to the knowledge of the main ship plants, to ensure the safety of ship and navigation. Besides, the course deals with the issues related to safety of damaged ships, after collision or grounding events. Besides, the correct interpretation of the main international Rules for the safety of ship and navigation, as well as of the marine environment, is a further objective, which is reached by the analysis of the main international rules, the discussion of several case studies and the application to existing reference ships.
Knowledge and understanding: Students shall prove to know the main topics concerning the safety of ship and navigation, as well as the safeguard of the marine environment, with reference to the management of the onboard plants, the procedures for fire containment and extinguishment, the safe navigation, also in damage conditions, as well as the skills of reading the drawings and schemes required for the correct and safe ship technical management.
Ability to apply knowledge and understanding: Students shall prove to apply the acquired topics and theoretical proficiencies, required to assure and increase the onboard safety level.
Judgment autonomy: Students shall autonomously evaluate and assess the main hazards, depending on ship type, and shall be capable of applying the corrective actions to increase the safety level, if required.
Communicative Skills: Students shall acquire the skill of reading the schemes of the main onboard plants and describing relevant working principle.
Learning Skills: Students shall be capable of continuously update their skills, by reading books, articles and technical Rules, to update the personal knowledge based on the new required safety standards and operational procedures.
