Course description

Knowledge and understanding.
The student must demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:
a) fundamentals of electromagnetic radiation;
b) standard definitions of terms and symbols to be used for antenna description.

Ability to apply knowledge and understanding.
The student must demonstrate ability to apply fundamentals of electromagnetic radiation to analyze the properties of
a) some elementary antennas (wire antennas, planar antennas);
b) some antenna structures (1D arrays and 2D arrays).

Autonomy of judgement.
The student must demonstrate to address independently the analysis of the main properties of an antenna

Communication skills.
The student must demonstrate to clearly describe technical issues.

Learning skills.
The student must demonstrate to be able to integrate information coming from different sources and relevant to the analysis of antennas’ properties.

Prerequisites

Knowledge of the topics addressed in the courses of ANALYSIS CALCULUS and PHYSICS is needed.
Moreover, knowledge of the following topics is needed:
- complex numbers;
- Fourier transform;
- sinusoidal signals and phasor notation;
- generator, voltage, current, resistance, impedance, load, power;
- Maxwell equations;
- plane waves.

Syllabus

Basics of electromagnetics
- Maxwell Equations (frequency domain). Vector and Scalar Potentials. Free-Space Green Function. Transmitting and Receiving Antennas.

Wire Antennas.
- Relationship between radiated field and source spectrum. Visible region.
- Current distribution over a wire antenna. Short antenna. Half-wave antennas.

Arrays
- 1D Arrays: broadside arrays; endfire arrays.
- 2D Arrays.
- Relationship between radiated field and source spectrum. Visible region.
- Broadband antennas. Logperiodic antennas.

Planar antennas.
- Plane wave expansion of the field. Relationship between radiated field and aperture field spectrum. Visible region. Asymptotic expression of the far field. Aperture antennas. Reflector antennas. Parabolic reflector.

Learning assessment

Oral examination, about one hour long, aimed at verifying that:

- the student knows
a) fundamentals of electromagnetic radiation;
b) standard definitions of terms and symbols to be used for antenna description;
(mandatory to pass the examination)

- the student is able to apply the fundamentals of the electromagnetic radiation to analyze the properties of
a) some elementary antennas (wire antennas, planar antennas);
b) some antenna structures (1D arrays and 2D arrays).

- the student is able to address independently the analysis of the main properties of an antenna;

- the student is able to clearly describe technical issues;
(mandatory to pass the examination)

- the student is able to integrate information coming from different sources and relevant to the analysis of the antennas’ properties.

The examination consists of a discussion based on two questions.
