Course description

Gain knowledge on the various aspects related to competence in zoological field and main anthropic processes that require and suggest their application.
Students acquire self-consciousness and will be able to pinpoint the different approach related with the use of zooloical knowledge in the environmental criticity management.


Basic knowledge on animal biology and life cycle.
Propedeuticity: none


Basics of systematics, anatomy, morphology, ecology of the principal marine animal resources. Marine organisms in commercial fishing (alieutic resources): benthic, demersal, and pelagic commercial species. Spatio-temporal distribution of resources (life cycles, migrations). Typologies of exploitment of alieutic resources, with particular reference to Italy and Mediterranean Sea. Techniques and technological characteristics of fishing tools used in the Mediterranean and Atlantic Ocean. Features of biological resources, catch, biological sampling, analysis and data treatment. The concept of stock, increasing and decreasing factors (growth, recruitment, natural and fishing mortality, etc.). The impact of fishing tools on resources: concept of tool selectivity. The landscape of national and European marine fisheries. New generation approaches: the responsible and sustainable fishery. Study cases.

Excursus on the main Metazoan taxa relevant for applied studies in zoological field. Study methodologies. Evaluation methods of population dynamics. Elements of Cartography. Visual Census and environmental preferences. Management actions. Alien Species and biological invasions. Fouling. Control and management of pests.
The course will supply the student with the basic tools to study biodiversity, demography in terrestrial, freshwater and marine environments with particular reference to environmental factors and life cycle of several animal species. Such tools will be applied in order to understand the effects of indirect impacts (i.e. climate change) or direct (fishery, contamination, resources exploitment, etc.) on animal populations. Possible solutions applied to preservation will also be described (fishery management, protected areas, restauration, etc.).
Practicals in laboratory: Sorting techniques and microscopy. When possible, field exercitations will be carried out.

Lecture in presence, specialistic seminars, lab and field exercitations.


Suitable textbooks are not available at present. All materials (pdf files, presentations in powerpoint, and audio-video seminars) will be delivered to the students.

Students will gain judgement autonomy in the capacity to discriminate between the different approaches of biological type (but also including physico-chemical type) and to choose which is the most appropriate to the evaluation of status of a specific environmental context and, more generally, in the environmental criticity management.
Students will learn how to express competently on topics related to Applied Zoology knowledge and methodology, showing also good communication capacity.
Capacity to transfer the acquired knowledges by using informatic and digital technologies. Capability to organize didactically a scientific topic.
