Course description

The main objective of the course is to enable learners to analyze and interpret large amounts of data (not only bibliometric but also textual) through recent software tools made freely available on the Web by authoritative universities or large software companies. At the same time, students will acquire the necessary skills for the preparation of the master's degree thesis, will be able to identify disciplinary boundaries and will acquire awareness of the importance of interdisciplinary knowledge.

Prerequisites

Knowledge of the main features of Microsoft Excel. Ability to read and understand scientific articles in English.

Syllabus

First part (introductory): Biblio / Sciento / Informetrics: terminological questions - The empirical foundations of bibliometry: the index of scientific citations - The philosophical foundations of bibliometry - The mathematical foundations of bibliometry; maps and paradigms; measurement of scientific communication: from bibliometry to cybermetrics.
Second part (application): The main bibliographic databases - The tools for the management of bibliographic references - The bibliometric analysis methods (bibliographic coupling, co-citation analysis, keywords co-occurrence) - The analysis of qualitative data (text mining) - Vosviewer and Citnet explorer as mapping and clustering tools - Outline of network analysis using Excel node-xl.

Teaching Methods

Frontal (or distance) lessons of introduction to the course contents. Interactive frontal (or distance) lessons in which learners reproduce, with their own computer equipment, the biliometric and text-mining analyzes performed by the teacher.

Learning assessment

Production of a complete bibliometric analysis on a topic / an Author / a scientific journal / a theory or other chosen by the student in a set of proposals by the teacher. The paper will be assigned well in advance of the exam date.
Critical discussion of the paper in an oral test aimed at assessing the level of knowledge acquired (knowledge and understanding), the ability to apply the methodologies and tools covered (applied knowledge and understanding), the ability to identify and discuss the limitations of the work carried out, the ability to indicate the directions for improvement (autonomy of judgment),
the ability to use the appropriate terminology (communication skills) in Italian or optionally in English.

Skills particularly useful in working environments at high intensity of textual and / or audiovisual data (journalism, research, teaching, archiving, etc.) are aimed at. These skills will form as a necessary basis of knowledge for the development of new knowledge and procedures and for the integration of knowledge from different fields.
