Course description

Objectives
The main goal of the course is to provide students with the basic concepts related to metrology, measurement methodologies and architecture of the main digital measuring instruments, so that they can be able to make design choices and performance evaluations in this context.
The course also aims to put students in condition of using measurement instruments in the lab with a good degree of autonomy.

Knowledge and understanding
Basic knowledge of the laws on measurement uncertainty.
Knowledge of the general criteria of measurement and evaluation of uncertainty and for designing measurement systems operating on communication and biomedical signals.

Applying knowledge and understanding
Ability to integrate knowledge in the field of electronic measurements, circuit theory and signal theory.
Ability to apply the criteria for the selection and use of instrumentation for measurements in time, amplitude and frequency domains.

Making judgments
Ability to review and design methods and measurement instruments, depending on target uncertainty and budget.
Ability to process critical data and results.

Communication skills
Ability to communicate the design characteristics and the principles of operation of the main instruments for measurements in the time, amplitude and frequency domains.

Learning skills
Ability to develop, outline, summarize the contents acquired.
Be able to undertake further studies on complex measurement systems on non stationary signals, including automated measurement systems.

Prerequisites

Electrical circuits, Electronics, Signal Theory, Linear Systems (suggested).

Syllabus

Electronic counters. (1 ECTS)
Digital voltmeters and multimeters. (2 ECTS)
Digital scopes. (1 ECTS)
Foundations on biomedical measurements. Biopotentials and related measurements (3 CFU)
The course includes laboratory activities related to the topics above.

Teaching Methods

During the course, theoretical aspects will be alternated with their practical applications. Group work is stimulated.

Learning assessment

The exam is organized in a way that students can present different topics in the classroom, showing their ability to process and discuss technical information.
