Course description

Educational objectives: they are mainly related to the correct knowledge of the main typologies of ship constructions, with reference to ship classification, rules, materials, connections, structural details and fabrication techniques. The skill of classifying the ship structures represents a further educational objective of the course. Finally, it is expected that students are capable of reading the ship structural drawings, by the analysis of several schemes of existing ships carried out during the course.

Knowledge and understanding: Students shall prove to know the main topics related to ship technology and construction, with reference to ship typologies, fabrication techniques, connections, materials and classification. Finally, students shall be capable of determining the section modulus of some basic sections, in order to assess the bending strength.

Ability to apply knowledge and understanding: Students shall prove to apply the acquired topics and theoretical proficiencies, required to correctly read the ship structural drawings, with main reference to the ordinary and reinforced transverse sections, and the watertight transverse bulkheads. Besides, students shall be capable of correctly determining the section modulus of ordinary stiffeners with attached plating.

Judgment autonomy: Students shall autonomously evaluate and classify the main ship typologies, the applied materials, by correctly reading and understanding relevant structural drawings and schemes.

Communicative Skills: Students shall acquire the skill of reading the section schemes of main structural elements of ships, also with reference to the applied materials and the most suitable welding techniques.

Learning Skills: Students shall be capable of continuously update their skills, by reading books, articles and rules (mainly in English), in order to acquire a good capacity of enhancing the own knowledge in the field of ship technology and construction.

Syllabus

BASICS OF SHIP STRUCTURES/SHIP CONSTRUCTION (Deck/Engine): 26 h
Classification of ships: displacement, semi-displacement and planning hulls. Main layouts of ships and basic nomenclature: general cargo ships, bulk carriers, oil tankers, containerships, ro-ro/pax ships. Tensile test for ductile materials. Charpy impact test. Brinell hardness test. Classification of hull steels: normal strength and high tensile steels. Classification of light alloy materials. Composite materials embodied in the ship industry sector. Welding techniques onboard ships: covered electrode, MIG, MAG and TIG. Main elements of steel ships. Typical cross-sections of ships with transverse, longitudinal and mixed structural configurations. Detailed analysis of the structural designs of a 35000 DWT bulk carrier: ordinary cross-section, reinforced cross-section, corrugated bulkhead.

SHIP STABILITY (Deck/Engine): 10 h
Vertical bending moment: still-water and wave loads. Section modulus of stiffeners with attached platings and assembled cross-sections. Hull-girder loads and hull-girder section modulus. Loading plans and management of maximum admissible stresses.

INSPECTING OF DEFICINES OR DAMAGES TO THE CARGO SPACES, THE HATCH COVERS AND THE BALLAST WATER TANKS (Deck): 4 h
The phenomenon of corrosion wastage: dry and water corrosion. The galvanic cell and the galvanic series of elements. Main techniques to reduce the corrosion wastage. Replacement criteria of corroded elements and net-scantling approach.

PLANTS AND PUMPING SYSTEMS (Engine): 8 h
Auxiliary hydraulic plants: electrohydraulic steering gears, stabilizing fins, deck auxiliaries, assessment of the ship Equipment Number. Pneumatic plants: air treatment and saturation curves, air dehumidification and basic schemes.

The course furnishes the basic elements concerning the classification and main ship typologies, the hull materials with particular reference to steel and light alloy, the main ship construction typologies and loads acting on the hull girder, as well as the most commonly applied welding techniques.

The course furnishes some competencies required by the STCW Convention, as amended, for Deck Officers and Marine Engineers at Operational Level, embodied in the MIT decree dated 19th December 2016, namely “Percorso formativo per accedere alle figure professionali di Allievo Ufficiale di Coperta e Allievo Ufficiale di Macchina”, as amended by the MIT decree number 35 dated 10th October 2018.

Particularly, the course furnishes the following competencies, listed in the Attachment I of the above-mentioned decree, for Deck Officer Cadets:
- Basics of ship structures; 26 h;
- Ship stability: 10 h;
- Inspecting of deficiencies or damages to the cargo spaces, the hatch covers and the ballast water tanks: 4h.

Besides, the course furnishes the following competencies, listed in the Attachment II of th above-mentioned decree, for Marine Engineer Cadets:
- Ship construction: 26h;
- Ship stability: 10 h;
- Plants and pumping systems: 8 h.

Learning assessment

The exam consists of verifying the achievement of the previously defined educational goals, by an oral examination during which students shall discuss several plant schemes of existing ships, to evaluate the autonomous capacity of reading and comprehension.
