Course description

Education objectives: The educational objectives of the course are related to the knowledge of the main fixing and maintenance activities of the ship onboard plants, as well as to the technical management of the ship to preserve the safety of ship and navigation, in case of fire or emergency.

Knowledge and understanding: The student shall prove to know the main topics related to the technical management of the ship and the maintenance activities of the ship onboard plants.

Ability to apply knowledge and understanding: Students shall prove to apply the acquired topics and theoretical proficiencies, required to preserve the efficiency of the ship onboard plants.

Judgment autonomy: Students shall autonomously evaluate the main onboard sources of hazard, depending on the ship type, and shall be capable of applying the appropriate corrective actions, if required.

Communicative Skills: Students shall acquire the skill of organize and supervise the operations of technical management and fixing of the ship onboard plants.

Learning Skills: Students shall be capable of continuously update their skills, by reading books, articles and technical rules, in order to update the own knowledge to the new safety standards and operational procedures.

Syllabus

Technical management of the onboard plants (M.1/M.2/M.3): scheduled maintenance activities; automatic and remote controls; safety procedures during the engine watchkeeping.

Scheduled maintenance and fixing operations (M.4/M.5/M.6/M.7): emergency or temporary fixings of the ship onboard plants; dismantling, assembly, tuning and fixing of the onboard machinery and equipment; employment of special utensils and measure instruments to tune, assemble, dismantle and fix the onboard machinery and equipment; maintenance and fixing of the electric equipment, switching panels, electric motors, electric AC and DC plants.

Mechanical operations (M.8/M.9/M.10): rmployment of manual utensils, shapings and measure instruments; employment of sealants and packaging; procedure to carry out a safe maintenance of the onboard machinery and equipment.

Emergency technical management of the ship (M.11): technical management of the ship in case of fire or accident, with particular reference to the oil plants.

Theoretical reminder of hydraulics and hydraulics, of the basic characteristics of on-board systems and pumping systems.

Deals with the basic elements concerning the technical management of the ship plants, with particular reference to the scheduled maintenance activities of the ship onboard plants, the safety procedures and the emergency fixings, as well as the technical management of the ship in case of fire or accident. A significant part of the course is devoted to practical laboratory activities by means of ship plant and engine simulators.
The course furnishes some competencies required by the STCW Convention, as amended, for Deck Officers and Marine Engineers at Operational Level, embodied in the MIT decree dated 19th December 2016, namely “Percorso formativo per accedere alle figure professionali di Allievo Ufficiale di Coperta e Allievo Ufficiale di Macchina”.
Particularly, the course furnishes the following competencies, listed in the Attachment II of th above-mentioned decree, for Marine Engineer Cadets:
M.1: Scheduled maintenance activities;
M.2: Automatic and remote controls;
M.3: Safety procedures during the engine watchkeeping;
M.4: Emergency or temporary fixings of the ship onboard plants;
M.5: Dismantling, assembly, tuning and fixing of the onboard machinery and equipment;
M.6: Employment of special utensils and measure instruments to tune, assemble, dismantle and fix the onboard machinery and equipment;

Teaching Methods

Frontal lessons and practical laboratory activities.

Textbooks

The teaching material consists of:
- Reference books in Italian and English;
- Technical Rules in English;
- Lecture notes of all lessons.

Learning assessment

The exam consists of verifying the achievement of the previously defined educational goals, by an oral examination during which students shall discuss several plant schemes of existing ships, to evaluate the autonomous capacity of reading and comprehension.
