Course description

The course covers theories, tools and practices related to organizational design. The course intends to develop knowledge and understanding skills applied to organizational behavior, coordination mechanisms and organizational forms
Knowledge and understanding: the student should be able to understand the basic concepts of organization, with peculiar reference to organizational behaviour, coordination mechanisms, and forms of organization.
Applying knowledge and understanding: the student should be able to apply the acquired knowledge to organizational diagnosis and design.
Making judgments: the student should be able to use autonomously the acquired knowledge solving specific issues, such as the analysis of organizational issues and the identification of more suitable coordination mechanisms and organizational forms.
Communication: the student is expected to give clear and in-depth answers to the questions of the written exam and oral exam.
Lifelong learning skills: the student should be able to show a good learning ability, by widening, for example, his/her knowledge with use of relevant bibliographic references. The student will have the opportunity to apply the knowledge gained in previous courses integrating them with the additional professional skills that characterize the course.


Fundamentals of Management (Economia Aziendale)


The course povides a framework for the practical implementation of organizational design changes.
1st block (24 hours) - The challenge of organizational design, the multi-contingency model of the organization, the information processing theory.
Assessing the scope and goals of the organization. Assessing the Strategy:
Strategy and Environment.Analyzing the Structure. Traditional configurations of the firm. New organizational forms?
Block II (24 hours) - Assessing Process and People. Work, task design and agents. Leadership and organizational climate.
Block III (24 hours) - Analyzing Coordination, Control, and Incentives. Designing the structure and coordination.Designing the architecture and the sequence of change
Implementing the Architecture. Implementing the change.

Teaching Methods

Lectures. Moreover, students will be trained by means of a variety of interactive teaching methods such as discussion of cases, teamwork and presentations, that enable students to gain a solid understanding of the complexities of modern organizations.

Learning assessment

At the end of the course, learning outcomes will be tested through a final exam. The exam will consist of a written and an optional oral examination. Final written exam will consist of multiple choice and open-ended questions. For students attending the course the written exam could also consist of open questions related to a project work and open questions that directly refer to course material. The students who will pass the written exam with at least 26/30 could take the oral exam.
