Course description

The main goal of the course is to provide basic tools and key-principles of microeconomics and macroeconomics.
The following are the expected learning outcomes, in accordance with the Dublin descriptors.
- Knowledge and understanding: students must demonstrate to know and understand the main characteristics of the demand and supply and the different market structures in which consumers and firms can operate. Moreover, students must demonstrate to understand the main market failure factors and the reasons for the government intervention. Furthermore, students must demonstrate to have acquired the key concepts of macroeconomics.
- Applying knowledge and understanding: at the end of the course students will have to demonstrate that they are able to apply the theoretical background acquired during the course to the reality in which they live.
- Making judgements: students will be able to individually deepen concepts and methodologies acquired during the course.
- Communication skills: during the exam section students should be able to answer the questions of the written test in a clear, concise and exhaustive way, using scientific terminology appropriate to the economic issues being studied and making extensive use of graphic analysis. Moreover, they should be able to solve the proposed exercises.
- Learning skills: students must demonstrate to have acquired the fundamentals of the subject, both during the class attendance and studying the textbook. Furthermore, students must demonstrate to be able to deepen the contents proposed by the instructors by consulting and reading further references on the main sources of economic information (books, scientific articles, magazines, newspapers) demonstrating ability to stay updated and learning skills adapted to the real context.

Prerequisites

Basic background knowledge on mathematical analysis is required for effectively following the course.

Syllabus

Introduction to microeconomics (2 hours). Market, demand and supply (4 hours). Consumer theory and Production theory (30 hours). Market structures (7 hours). Market failures and public intervention (4 hours). Principles of Macroeconomics (25 hours).

Teaching Methods

The course will be based on lectures and exercises. Key concepts will be explained during the lectures, for the understanding of which extensive use of graphs will be made. Furthermore, numerous examples taken from reality will be provided, which can help in understanding the economic issues under study.

Additional course materials will be provided by the instructor during the course.

Learning assessment

The exam consists of a written test to be taken in 60 minutes. It includes both open questions and exercises.
