Course description

At the end of the course, the student:

- knows and understands the principles and general rules governing relations between international organisations and other entities of the international community;
- is aware of and understands the main trends in the phenomenon of the international organisation.

Prerequisites

Mastery of the fundamental institutions of international law

Syllabus

Introduction to the phenomenon of institutionalised cooperation: birth, historical evolution, theoretical framework: 1.1. notion of international organisation; 1.2. models for interpreting the phenomenon of international organization; 1.3. origin of the phenomenon of international organisation; 1.4. historical evolution of the phenomenon of international organisation;
2. The characteristics of the constituent act and its amendments; 2.1. hard organisations; 2.2. soft organisations; 2.3. evolution of the international organisation: amendments and revisions of the constituent act.
3. The structure and functioning of the international organisation: 3.1. competences of the international organisation; 3.2. membership; 3.3. other ways of participating in the international organisation; 3.4. the institutional structure; 3.5. the normative acts of the international organisation; 3.6. the decision-making process; 3.7. the immunities and privileges of the international organisation and its officials; 3.8. the financing of international organisations; 3.9. the settlement of disputes as a structural element of the international organisation;
4. The external relations of international organisations: 4.1. relations between the international organisation and other subjects of international law; 4.2. international legal personality
5. The relationship between the law of the international organization and the domestic law

The course will be articulated in frontal Lessons and, possibly, in seminars delving into topics linked to current events

Learning assessment

The learning test will consist of an oral interview, lasting approximately 30 minutes, aimed at ascertaining the knowledge and understanding of the main trends that characterize the institutional and operational aspects of international organizations. The minimum score will be achieved if the student demonstrates an understanding of the fundamental characteristics of the phenomenon of international organizations. The maximum score will be achieved if the student can provide concrete examples drawn from the practice of international organizations.
