Course description

The course covers theories, tools and practices related to organizational design and to inter organizational relationships. The course aims at giving students the fundamental tools of inter organizational analysis and design in order to understand how networks operate, how they can be designed to achieve their goals, and what are the processes and the phenomena that affect their functioning. The students will be able to use tools useful to analyze organizational networks.

Prerequisites

Fundamentals of organizational theory and design.

Syllabus

Introduction to organizational design. The environment of management. Managing in a global environment. Planning and goal setting. Designing organization structure. The contingency theory. The fit between environment and organization. The fit between technology and organization. Inter organizational relations. The interfirm network: the problem of organizational boundaries. The population ecology of organization. The resource dependence perspective. The new institutionalism approach. Network structure. Network coordinating mechanisms. Social Network Analysis. Network and cluster analysis

Learning assessment

The exam will consist of both a written and oral examination. Final written exam will consist of multiple choice, a case study with open questions that directly refer to the textbook. For students attending the course the written exam could also consist of open questions related to a project work and open questions that directly refer to material covered in the course. The students who will pass the written exam with at least 26/30 could take the oral exam.
