Course description

The course of STATISTICAL QUALITY CONTROL aims to explore the main statistical tools essential to the activities aimed at improving the quality of products and services. In particular, the student is able to: perform the statistical process control; carry out the analysis of the capacity of production processes; carry out sample control of the production.
The course of Statistical Quality Control aims to provide the conceptual and methodological foundations underlying quality control, thus acquiring a capacity for analyzing these topics. Knowledge and understanding are mainly acquired through the active participation of the student in frontal lessons and through individual study.
The student will be able to use the control charts to correctly analyze a production process, calculate the capacity and the verification of project tolerances. Moreover, it will be able to choose the most suitable control charts for the specific process, as well as the optimal scheduling technique for planning and controlling an individual project order, regarding time, cost and quality.
The course provides an adequate knowledge of the techniques and methodologies and the practical and operational skills to guarantee independent judgment in being able to identify the non-conformity of a quality management system and to identify and apply effective corrective actions. The student develops his own independent judgment by participating in the discussions and interventions requested by the teacher during the lectures. Therefore, even working in working groups, he will be able to motivate his choices during the analysis phase, as well as to interpret the results obtained, in light of the cognitive problem faced.
The course aims to provide students with the appropriate skills and tools necessary to present in a clear and rigorous way, using modern communication tools, their analyses and their conclusions, both to specialists and non-specialists of the subject, both in writing that oral also through the use of the main reporting software applications. The ability to communicate with clarity, scientific rigor and methodological knowledge acquired by the student is verified and evaluated during the test of assessment of the examination profit.


The students need to have basic knowledge in statistics. A genuine interest in data analysis is a plus!


Block I (about 6 hours of lessons): the meaning of quality and quality improvement; dimensions of quality; quality engineering terminology; a brief history of quality control and improvement; management aspects of quality improvement; the link between quality and productivity; quality costs; implementing quality improvement.
Block II (about 10 hours of lessons): modeling process quality; describing variation; important discrete and continuous distributions; statistics and sampling distributions; point estimation of process parameters; statistical inference for a single sample; statistical inference for two samples; the analysis of variance.
Block III (about 26 hours of lessons): methods and philosophy of statistical process control; chance and assignable causes of quality variation; statistical basis of the control chart; control charts for variables: control charts for x and r; control charts for x and s; control charts for attributes: the control chart for fraction nonconforming; control charts for nonconformities (defects); choice between attributes and variables control charts; guidelines for implementing control charts.
Block IV (about 6 hours of lessons): process capability analysis using a histogram or a probability plot; process capability ratios; process capability analysis using a control chart and designed experiments.

The main topics discussed at the course are: the meaning of "quality" and "quality improvement"; statistical methods for the improvement of quality; statistical process control methods; statistics and sample distributions; statistical control of process; control charts for variables; control charts for attributes; analysis of the process capacity.

Teaching Methods

The teaching activity consists of 48 hours of lectures, during which exercises are also proposed on the covered topics. Students are also assigned additional exercises to perform at home, individually or in groups, which are then corrected and discussed during the lesson hours.

Learning assessment

The assessment is based on an oral examination. The vote of the examination is expressed in scale from 0 to 30. To pass the exam (a vote not lower than 18/30), the student must demonstrate at least a basic knowledge of the techniques illustrated during the course. To achieve the highest score (ie 30/30 or cum laude), the student must demonstrate an excellent knowledge of all the course contents as well as the ability to apply them to problem solving. The exhibition capacity and the degree of mastery of the vocabulary of the discipline also contribute to determining the final grade.
