Course description

The course aims at providing students with the theory and methodologies for assessing natural capital and ecosystems services in marine and terrestrial ecosystems. The students acquire the main environmental accounting techniques for assessing the ecological and economic value of natural resources.

Prerequisites

Basic notions of ecology.

Syllabus

Notion of natural capital. Natural capital stocks: soil, water, atmosphere, biodiversity. Notion of ecosystem services. Ecosystem services classification. Human pressure factors. Environmental accounting. The UN SEA-EEA framework. The energy accounting method. Ecological and economic assessment of natural resources. Integrating ecological and economic theory. Ecological-economics.

The course deals with the theoretical and applied aspects of natural capital and ecosystems services assessment by means of environmental accounting techniques.

Teaching Methods

Frontal lectures, group discussions, intermediate tests and final exam.
