Course description

1. Knowledge and understanding: During the front lessons a series of general tools are provided. Students should know how to use these tools in order to solve more complex problems, always keeping in mind the finite computational of electronic machines.
2. Applying knowledge and understanding: The Numeric Logic approach implies the skill of problem solving of a given topic trough his simplification in a large number of more simple routines. Students should be able to recognize and sketch the small procedures of a more complex problem in order to submit a model of a possible final solution.
3. Making judgements: As explained above, the skill of recognizing the small procedures of a more complex problem is maybe one of the main goals of the course. This ability represents the minimum requirement in order to build a solid professional career.
4. Communication skills: During the last twenty years, a really large diffusion of personal computers has been experimented all over the world. Nevertheless, not the comprehension of the numerical logic nor the rigorous scientific language of the computer science can be experienced in the students moving their first steps. After the course, students should be able to explain, clearly and simply, topics concerning computer science also to people with a not very high level of expertise.
5. Learning skills: Computer science is experimenting. “Stay hungry, stay foolish”. The short course should leave with every student the fun and joy to read up, the curiosity to discovering how the computer logic is able to improve our life.

Prerequisites

Any specific requirement is necessary. A normal base knowledge is enough in order to attend the course successfully.

Syllabus

1. Bit and Byte. Multiples of a Byte: kByte, MByte, GByte. Byte-Character coding.
2. RAM and CPU in the Von Neumann model.
3. RAM: characteristics.
4. CPU: characteristics. FLOPS and MIPS. Frequency of a CPU. Hz, kHz, MHz, GHz.
5. ROM.
6. Mass storage units. Hard disks: anatomy and characteristics. Formatting a mass storage unit.
7. Input, Output and I/O peripherals. Reserved and standard communication ports. Port’s characteristics. Optional cards. Audio, Video and generic devices cards.
8. Operating System. MS DOS. File System’s elements. MS DOS and Windows File System’s characteristics.
9. Multitasking/Time Slice vs. Cooperative S.O.
10. LAN - Local Area Networks.
11. Internet. Protocols. Browser and e-mail.
12. Pec and digital signature.
13. Spreadsheet.
14. Wordprocessor.

There will be theoretical and applicative lessons during which the class discovers how to trie their empirical level of knowledge of electronic computers to a solid scientific basis. During the lessons you can touch some components of personal computers. You can see how a hard drive, motherboard, communication port, etc. is made.
Other examples concern the use of search engines, e-mail, digital signature and certified e-mail. Particular space is also given to the practical knowledge of the most common tools of a spreadsheet and a word processor.
It is assumed that course participants will dedicated some time to individual study to the frontal lessons.

Learning assessment

During the course many kind of proof are provided. Some of them at individual level, some at collective level. The proofing and profiling material is proposed during the classroom lessons and anyway is attached to the slides which are provided with the didactic material and distributed trough the official web site of our University. For the students who chose to attend the course, at least two midterm exams must be valid in order to have the final score. Alternatively, a final written proof (eventually fallowed by an oral proof) is previewed for the students who chose to not attend the course, or for the students that cannot take the midterm exams.
The final test concerns all the topics discussed during the course and it consists in 15 questions, each provided of 3 possible answers. For each correct answer, 2 points are attributed. Not given or wrong answers do not contribute to the final score. Students that are scored with less of 18/30 should repeat the exams. Student scored at least 20/30 are considered as passing graded. The score of 18/30, otherwise, implies a supplementary oral exam.
