The course aims to provide students with a solid basic language preparation which is particularly intended for the development and acquisition of the skills required to approach a (non-)specialized text in French. Lectures are carried out in French with a communicative approach, and aim to foster understanding, reading skills, written and oral expression, up to a B2+ level of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). At the same time, the course provides, in an intercultural perspective, specific knowledge related to French history and culture, and to the country’s Government. Finally, the course aims to introduce the student to the study of economic and commercial terminology and language by reading and analyzing some authentic documents.

Knowledge and understanding
At the end of the course, the student must demonstrate to know the main morphosyntactic structures of French language and also to understand a text of economics.
Applying knowledge and understanding
At the end of the course, the student must demonstrate to know how to apply the French language morphosyntactic structures and to analyze a text of economics, applying the knowledge and skills acquired to other specialty fields of economic nature.
At the end of the course, the student must demonstrate that he is able to choose among the different linguistic registers those most appropriate to the situational context of use and to be able to independently evaluate the appropriate lexicon and syntax according to the situational context of use. During the course the student learns how to independently choose the vocabulary and syntax suitable for the communicative context.
At the end of the course, the student must demonstrate that he can communicate orally in French in a clear and appropriate way. In practice activities and workgroups the student will learn how to choose vocabulary and syntactic structures which are appropriate for the communicative context.
Lifelong learning skills
At the end of the course students will be able to consult authentic material in French and will be able to keep abreast of issues related to subjects that interest them using digital and printed resources in French. During the course, insights are provided through exercises to be carried out progressively autonomously and then verified by the teacher in class.
Although knowledge of the basic structures of the French language is desirable, corresponding to a starting level A2 of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR), no specific prerequisites are required for understanding the course contents.
For étudiants de premier niveau attendance of any tutoring activities designed to support the progressive acquisition of the foreign language is recommended.
The course is divided into two sections, one linguistic (module I and module II) and one monographic. The linguistic section involves exercises related to the structures and essential elements of morphology, syntax and lexicon of French. The monographic part aims to provide, from an intercultural perspective, specific knowledge relating to the history, culture, constitutional order and economy of French-speaking countries.

The course is developed both through lectures, also using videos in French, and through individual or group practical exercises and workshops/group works. This allows student to use the systemic-interactionist learning paradigm that places the student at the center of the learning process in a development of self-learning through mutual interaction and sharing with the student group or community. Group work and the group itself becomes a real experiential laboratory, where the student can use the different tools of the Moodle platform (forum, chat, assignments, glossaries, surveys, quizzes, etc.).
Student can also attend French conferences and seminars of well-known scholars from the French-speaking world, guests for research stays at the University.

The course includes an initial test aimed at ascertaining the student's skills, a mid-term test (with the same structure as the final written test will serve as feedback for both students and teacher) and a final test that tend to ascertain the gradual and final acquisition of the four language skills: oral and written comprehension, oral and written production. The evaluation takes into account the constant application of the student to all stages of the training process. Active participation in the activities planned during the course and in the in-depth seminars constitutes an evaluation element that contributes to the outcome of the final exam. The verification of knowledge and disciplinary skills indicated in the learning objectives takes place, therefore, through moments of systematic observation and formal verifications.
The final exam is made up of two parts: a written test (1 hour, 35 multiple choice, 10 cloze or gap fill questions) and an oral examination, both exams aimed at assessing written and oral comprehension and production skills, as well as verifying the skills acquired. The use of the dictionary is not allowed for the written test. The two tests take place on the same day.
The evaluation criteria and final marks of the written exam are established on the basis of the following mark breakdown (final examination is not validated by a digit score: its success is met by the student showing a proficiency level):
- a mark of less than 18 out of 30: the level is considered insufficient, and the candidate has not fulfilled any of the results listed in the “knowledge and understanding” section;
- a mark ranging from 18-20 out of 30: in this case the candidate’s performance is considered sufficient and s/he fulfils the results listed in the “knowledge and understanding” section.
- a mark ranging from 21-23 out of 30: in this case the candidate’s performance is fully sufficient as s/he fulfils the results listed in both the “knowledge and understanding” section and the “applying knowledge and understanding” section.
- a mark ranging from 24-26 out of 30: in this case the candidate has reached a good level and has fulfilled the results listed as the expected outcomes of the course;
- a mark ranging from 27-29 out of 30: in this case the candidate has reached a very good level and has fulfilled the results listed as the expected outcomes of the course;
- a mark ranging from 30-30 cum laude: in this case the candidate has reached an excellent level and has fulfilled all the results listed as the expected outcomes of the course.
To achieve the oral test (discussion of one or more articles, chosen by the teacher, taken from the textbooks) students will have to demonstrate that they have reached a sufficient level of proficiency in relation to the learning outcomes set as the course’s learning objectives.
Students who are already in possession of a proficiency language certificate in French language equal at least to a B1 level issued by an official certification institution in the last 2 years are exempted from the written test. They must send the official certification to the teacher.
For the oral exam, students are invited to contact the teacher to agree, during the reception hours, the teaching material for the exam.
