Course description

At the end of the course the student will be able:
to describe the role of financial system in the real economy; to manage the basic concepts for the study of financial institution and financial markets; to understand issues on asymmetric information problems in the financial markets.
Knowledge and understanding: the students should acquire full knowledge of the structure and the role of financial institution and financial markets and should be able to analyse the protection mechanism against the asymmetric information problems.
Applying knowledge and understanding: the student should be able to apply the acquired theoretical knowledge to the real world.
Making judgements: the student should employ a critical approach in the study and should be able to increase autonomously his knowledge.
Communication: the student must answer with a correct use of economic language, in a concise and exhaustive way to the open-ended questions of the final exam.
Lifelong learning skills: the students must prove to have a good learning level to attend a subsequent post-graduates course or a 2nd level University Master degree.

Prerequisites

Knowledge of basic methodological tools of microeconomics and macroeconomics.

I MODULE
The course begins with the review of some microeconomics concepts: market failures and asymmetric information; moral hazard and adverse selection
II MODULE
Structure and functioning of financial system; financial markets; bond market; efficiency in financial markets; complete markets and financial activities; incomplete markets; asymmetric information in financial markets;
III MODULE
Protection mechanism to counteract asymmetric information problems in financial markets; debt contract; credit rationing in banking financial intermediation.

Learning assessment

Written final exam. The exam consists in open-ended questions on the course themes. It is possible also an oral examination (in some cases) in order to better evaluate the student’s knowledge .
