Course description

The main purpose of this course is to introduce the basic Physics principles, in the specific fields of the Kinematics, Dynamics, Fluids and Thermodynamic, together with their practical applications.


Knowledge and understanding:

The student must demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the fundamentals of classical physics, with particular regard to Kinematics, Dynamics, Fluid dynamics and Thermodynamics, and their application context. The student must know how to use the vectors as physical quantities.


Ability to apply knowledge and understanding:

Students must demonstrate to use their own acquired knowledge to solve the main problems of physics, even when they appear in concrete contexts. These skills have also to be applied to solve exercises.


Independent judgment: 
The student must be able to know how to independently evaluate the results of physical law applications.


Communication Skills:
The student should be able to support a basic conversation on Physics topics by making examples related to the Kinematics, Dynamics, Fluid dynamics and Thermodynamics.


Learning Skills: 
The student must be able to update and deepen autonomously specific topics and applications of physical laws related to Kinematics, Dynamics, Fluid dynamics and Thermodynamics.

Prerequisites

The student should have a pre-acquired knowledge of vectors, operations between vectors and their properties and understand how to use them as physical quantities. 
Knowledge of geometry, algebra and math analysis is also required.

Syllabus

Introduction (6 hrs)
Measurement of magnitudes - Scientific standard unit system and unit conversions - Reference systems - Trigonometric and vector calculations.
Kinematics (14 hrs)
The material point - Average and Instantaneous speed and acceleration -Kinematics with vectors- Ballistic motion - Circular motion;
Dynamics (18 hrs)
Newton's first Law and relativity principle - Definition of work - Kinetic and potential energy - Mechanical energy - Power - Energy and Momentum conservation
Dynamics of rigid bodies (10 hrs)
Center of Mass - Inertia - Angular momentum - Rotation - Equilibrium conditions.
Gravitation (6 h)

Newton theorem and overlapping principle - Gravitation and weight strength - Gravitational potential energy - Kepler's law. Momentum. 


Fluids (6 hrs)
Perfect Fluids - Pressure - Pascal's principle- Setvino's Law and Archimede's principle - Bernoulli's Theorem.
Thermodynamics (12 hrs)
Temperature, heat and first law of the Thermodynamics - Specific and latent heat- Adiabatic Transformation - Entropy and second law of the Thermodynamics.

The course provides basic elements to understand
the principles of kinematics, dynamics, gravitation, fluids
and thermodynamics.
The course provides some of the skills required by the
STCW 2010 international convention to access the professional figures of
Deck and Engine Officer, implemented by the MIT Ministerial Decree 19 December
2016 "Training path to access professional figures
of Deck Officer Cadet and Engine Officer Cadet "
as amended by MIT Ministerial Decree no. 35 of 10/10/2018.
In particular, among the skills provided by the course there are those
specifies in Annex I of the previous decree for Deck
Officiers Cadets Deck and in Annex II for
Engine Officers Cadets, namely:
* basic physics and kinematics

Learning assessment

The purpose of the assessment is to determine the level of achievement of the objectives previously indicated. The verification procedure consists of an oral examination during which the ability of the student to apply the physical principles acquired during the course to practical problems is tested.
In addition, two intermediate written tests are foreseen.

Lectures are in Italian. The professors are fluent in English and are available to interact with students in English, and to allow the use of English during examinations.
